Derry based ladies football club, Foyle Belles F.C. have become an official feeder club of English FA Women’s Super League side, Doncaster Rovers Belles.
In the 17-year history of the national League set-up in England, the Doncaster club have been one of the Ladies’ games most successful clubs and, in March 2009, were founding members of the new Super League.
The link-up will allow Foyle players the opportunity to travel to Doncaster with the prospect of earning scholarships and provide the potential to play full-time football but, as Foyle coach Terry Cassidy explained, the local emphasis is all about developing the game locally.
“We work closely with Doncaster Belles, keeping them up to date with the player’s progress,” explained the Foyle coach, “Some players will get the opportunity to go over to Doncaster where they have a chance to gain a scholarship and possibly gain an education whilst playing football.
“At Foyle Belles, we are about developing players, no matter what age or ability they are when they first come to us. We aim to improve all of our players ability and understanding of the game, so that they can further their footballing career and be able to go to some of the best leagues in the world.
“The links we have established with the clubs and universities/colleges allow our players to do so. For our younger girls they aim to make training fun whilst learning new skills in football and ours coaches have many years experience of training girls from aged five years
“Football is one of the most popular sport for females around the world and the amount of girls playing football in Ireland every year is rising faster than in any other sport,” added the Foyle coach, “We would encourage everyone to come along to training at Foyle no matter what you’re skill level.”
