LEAGUE OF IRELAND: Dundalk claim title

Former Derry City midfielder Patrick McEleney, helped Dundalk win the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title.

The Oriel Park men, who are managed by ex-Brandywell favourite Stephen Kenny, claimed their third league title in a row thanks to a 2-1 win over Bohemians tonight.

Andy Boyle gave them the lead early in the first half, before Mark Quigley levelled things just before half-time, but the title celebrations could start in earnest when an old Derry City routine helped clinch them the winner.

Ronan Finn’s free-kick from the half-way line picked out left-back Dane Massey and his header back across goal was turned home by Brian Gartland.

The move was very similar to the Candystripes goal against Gretna some ten years ago, during their memorable Europa League run in 2006.
