In Pictures - The rise of Derry soccer star James McClean

Waiting for Video...

He’s taking the English soccer world by storm since swapping Foyleside for Wearside and Irish fans calls for him to make the Euro 2012 squad are getting louder and louder.

Our look back through the Journal’s photographic archives show a young James McCLean proudly showing off his ‘best young player awards’ in 2007, through cutting his teeth with hometown club Derry City, his transfer to Sunderland, his Premier League and FA cup debuts, and onto making his debut for the Irish national team.

We’ ve also included some off the field pics of James - presenting awards to Derry’s next generation of potential stars in February of 2010, as well as a recent trip back to the Brandywell, and a visit to the Journal offices earlier this year.

Pics come courtesy of Journal staff photographers as well as Lorcan Doherty, Margaret McLaughlin, Kevin Brady, Steve Bardens and Preseye and INPHO - and the soundtrack comes from none other than the singing Mackem Dave Murray
