MAVERICKS ARE ICEMEN AS GERS CRASH AND BURN

Queen's Mavericks 6 Banbridge Rangers 2

RANGERS erratic start to the season continued on Saturday past when they were deservedly beaten by a well drilled Queen's team.

The students started brighter and on their fine home surface had the Banbridge side chasing shadows in the opening passages of play.

Queens to race into a 2-0 lead after the first half hour after some poor defending.

This prompted a temporary revival from Rangers with Ireland and McMinn linking well upfront to carve out a few half chances while in midfield Porter and Ward were beginning to get a foothold on proceedings.

Before the interval McMinn halved the deficit from the penalty spot after Cousins' initial shot had been handled by a defender.

Porter could have drew his team level after a great surge but opted to attempt a pass to Ireland which was intercepted inside the box when perhaps a shot may have proved more industrious with only the keeper to beat.

The second half should have seen a determined fight back as the Banbridge team were back in the game but it wasn't to be. With continued mistakes all over the park Queens regained control and soon scored two more goals to effectively seal the points.

Nicky Ireland salvaged some pride when he headed home a McBride cross with 10 minutes remaining.

Hynds in the Rangers goal was beaten for the sixth time by an exquisite chip by the Queens forward who took his tally in the game to four after a fine strikers performance. After last week's good result this was a step backwards for a Rangers team who have the ability to do better but must find consistency if they are to improve their league position.
