Two goals from Derry man James McClean knocked Morecambe out of the Capital One Cup at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.

Sunderland gave debuts to £22million new boys Stephen Fletcher and Adam Johnson, but it was McClean, a bargain buy from Derry City who stole the show.

McLean rose highest at the near post to head home a Johnson corner on 24 minutes before doubling Sunderland’s lead on 65 minutes when picked up a Johnson centre before avoiding a despairing tackle from Andy Parrish and slotting the ball past Morecambe keeper Roche from 12 yards.

The winger nearly had his hat-trick less than ten minutes later when he cut in from the right and fired a rasping right foot drive over the bar.
