McClean bags brace for Black Cats

Two goals from Derry man James McClean knocked Morecambe out of the Capital One Cup at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.

Sunderland gave debuts to £22million new boys Stephen Fletcher and Adam Johnson, but it was McClean, a bargain buy from Derry City who stole the show.

McLean rose highest at the near post to head home a Johnson corner on 24 minutes before doubling Sunderland’s lead on 65 minutes when picked up a Johnson centre before avoiding a despairing tackle from Andy Parrish and slotting the ball past Morecambe keeper Roche from 12 yards.

The winger nearly had his hat-trick less than ten minutes later when he cut in from the right and fired a rasping right foot drive over the bar.
