As the new Saturday Morning League season got underway with the Gilfillan Cup group stages, Phoenix Swifts issued a statement of intent after an emphatic win over Foyle Athletic.

In group two of the competition HML recorded an impressive 6-0 win against Oakleaf Celtic and Art Deco defeated The Bentley.

Sion Swifts defeated Tamnaherin Celtic in group three and in group five Clooney recorded a narrow win over Tristar.

Elsewhere Metro defeated Collon Celtic in group six; Strabane Athletic secured victory over Culmore in group seven and in Group eight Rosemount lost out to Championship side Gransha Institute.

Meanwhile, Oxford failed to field a team against Clifton Villa and will face a fine.

And in the same group the game between Drumahoe and Creggan Swifts was postponed due to a sudden death at the ground and that game will be played at a later date.

Group 2

HML . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .6

Oakleaf Celtic . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0

Oakleaf, to their credit, produced a brave defensive performance for much of the first half but just before half-time one of their defenders handled inside the penalty area. James McLaughlin stepped up and sent the resultant penalty past the keeper.

In the second half HML doubled their lead when Gerry Doherty headed into the net.

Connor Brady added a third goal for HML as Oakleaf began to fade.

An unstoppable goal from George Green made it 4-0 and then Brady scored his second goal of the game to secure the points for HML.

Green then scored his second goal of the game to complete the rout.

Art Deco . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3

Bentley FC . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1

Art Deco found themselves in front after just 10 minutes when Anthony Cairns drifted in unmarked at the back post and finished well.

The Bentley fought back well and when Canning was brought down inside the penalty area he sent his spotkick into the net.

Just before half-time Art Deco managed to get their noses back in front when Kevin Gallagher scored. In the second half Art Deco had the better of the chances, striking the woodwork no fewer than three times. Art Deco were reduced to 10 men however when Darren Quigley was sent off for dissent.

Bentley were pushing for an equaliser when they were hit on the break and Sean Duffy sealed the win for Art Deco with a neat left footed finish.

Group 3

Sion Swifts . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4

Tamnaherin Celtic . . . . . . . . . . .2

Tamnaherin took an early lead when Stephen Duffy scored and they quickly added a second as Liam Brolly found the net.

Sion Swifts managed to get right back into the game when Connor McGrath reduced the deficit.

Sion got back on level terms when Peter McGettigan netted.

In the second half Tamnaherin defender Robinson turned the ball past his own keeper to give Sion Swifts a 3-2 lead.

Incredibly Marty Doherty then turned the ball past his own keeper to gift Sion Swifts the win.

Group 4

Phoenix Swifts. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8

Foyle Athletic . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .0

Former Irish League star, Kevin Ramsey opened the scoring for Phoenix Swifts.

Ramsey added his second as Phoenix cruised into a 2-0 lead.

Paul Moore then got in on the scoring action when he netted twice.

Just before half-time Phoenix Swifts were awarded a penalty and Brendan McDonnell converted.

In the second half there were further goals from Connor Dean, Shane McCallion and a penalty from Dwayne McBrearty to end a miserable day for Foyle Athletic.

Group 8

Rosemount . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2

Gransha Institute . . . . . . . . . . . .5

Gransha Institute opened the scoring with a Jordan Armstrong header. Institute managed to double their lead on 35 minutes when Johnny Wilson unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

After the break Jordan McLaughlin netted a third for ‘Stute after a quick break.

Connor Mooney then reduced the arrears before Dave McCormick scored to make it 3-2. Stute hit back, however through Jack King and Johnny Wilson.
