Newbuildings United. . 1
Finn Harps . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0
David Scanlon was hailed a hero in Magheramason on Sunday afternoon, the Newbuildings player’s strike giving his side an impressive victory over Airtricity League, First Division representavies, Finn Harps.
And the win for the local Intermediate League representatives saw the “Villagers” extend their winning streak.
Finn Harps exuded pressure from the outset and within the opening 10 minutes, Aaron Harkin crashed an effort off Conor Thornton’s crossbar.
Newbuildings’ Garth Falconer orchestrated United’s first chance of the match when receiving a through ball from McBride but while the Harps keeper parried the effort into the path of Richard Lynch, he was unable to finish when under heavy pressure.
Clear-cut scoring opportunities were few in the first half but a moment of magic from David Scanlon put Newbuildings into the driving seat when he lobbed the keeper from well outside the penalty area before half-time.
Former Harps’s midfielder, Thomas McBride, had a long range effort touched wide of his upright by the visiting keeper while Sligo Rovers loanee, Rory Keating and former Derry City striker, Sean McCarron, both crashed efforts off the woodwork as Harps threw everything into attack after the break.
Sunday’s victory brought more delight for Newbuildings under the management of Peter Allen, the new boss declaring his feelings afterwards.
“It was a good test for us and the performance suggests that the future is bright for Newbuildings.”
Watched by members of the club’s management committee and their dedicated band of supporters, this performance suggested that United have the potential to rise through the ranks of the Northern Ireland League system, as their pursuit of promotion continues.
