The Venue at Ebrington Square will be transformed into a specially designed mini football pitch this Thursday as part of the European wide celebration of grassroots football.
Organised by the Irish Football Association, The Venue will host the UEFA Grassroots Day 2013 as part of the City of Culture celebrations.
Local schools, clubs and community groups will all get the chance to play on the pitch throughout the day, however, the main draw will be the ‘Maiden City Cup’ which will see Derry City (right) and Institute Legends teams take on local media and Councilors in what should be highly entertaining contests.
An ‘Education Zone’ will also give locals the opportunity to listen to some top class speakers such as N. I. International manager, Michael O’Neill and Manchester United Chief International Scout, Jim Lawlor.
Access to all these workshops are free of charge and will lead to football related qualifications.
The ‘Skills Zone’ will give people the opportunity to practice and test themselves in a series of skills stations, such as free-kicks, penalties, power shooting, dribbling etc.
All the way from Holland the new craze of ‘Pana’ football will give local youngsters the opportunity to learn and compete in 1v1 and 2v2 fast paced challenges, all set to the backdrop of a live MC and high octane music.
Red Bull world champion Freestyle Runner-up, Daniel Dennelly and local hot shot Stefan Connolly will also be putting on exhibitions and interactive workshops to show off their skills.
And a ‘Health & Well Being’ zone will provide up-to-date information and advice on topics such as diet and nutrition, mental health and tips on how we can live a healthy lifestyle.
Local boys and girls clubs will also be in attendance to promote their clubs and hopefully attract some new members.
Head of Grassroots Football, Irish FA, Lee Carroll is excited about what he believes will be a memorable day.
“We are extremely excited about this event considering nothing on this scale has taken place in this country before.
“We have a range of activities to cater for all ages and abilities and would encourage all those with an interest in football to come along and take part in what will be a truly memorable day”.
UEFA Grassroots Day takes place at ‘The Venue’, Ebrington and is open to the public with free admission from 10.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.
