Foyle win Ulster Bank Schools Cup with victory over Inst
FOYLE AND Londonderry College claimed victory in the Ulster Bank Schools Cup for the first time in six years with an all round performance that proved too strong for The Royal Belfast Academical Institution at Bready.
Three half centuries - two of them by the McCarter brothers - took the Derry school to a formidable 243 for 4 at a rate of almost seven an over in a game of 36 overs a side. It was a total “Inst” could not match, falling short by 64 runs.
Foyle found the boundary at Bready with punishing regularly with skipper Dean McCarter hitting eight fours and a six in a knock of 54 that proved to be the lion’s share of an opening partnership of 78.
However, the 18 year-old who hit a North West club record of 274 for Killyclooney just over a week ago was to be outscored by brother Graeme and Aaron Kitson whose partnership of 109 in just 10.3 overs for the fourth wicket took the game away from “Inst”.
Graeme was undefeated with 67 which included seven fours a two sixes and Kitson had five fours and three sixes to his name on his way to 57.
The Foyle total was a huge challenge in 36 overs despite promising signs in the early part of “Inst’s” reply. Akshay Dhareula and Michael Irwin put on 62 for the first wicket before the latter departed for 25 and thereafter wickets fell at a rate that proved too costly for the Belfast side.
Dhareula complete a half century that included seven four but the only real support later in the order came from Jamie Gibson with 27. Foyle’s opening bowler Nick Donnell did the damage in terms of both wickets and economy, his nine overs yielding a return of 4 for 38.
