Around the Local GAA clubs
Here’s what’s happening at your local GAA club....
The Under 16s played Swatragh last Sunday in the Shield Final at Kevin Lynch Park, Dungiven. The boys faced a very difficult task with some key players missing. Despite a good start the boys found it difficult to rise to the occasion in the first half and fell behind as Swatragh found the net on two occasions despite the best efforts of Caolán Flanagan, who had a fantastic game in nets. Na Magha found the net through Stephen Slattery but were unable to claw back the deficit and Swatragh ran out comfortable winners. Jason McBrearty, Caolán Flanagan, Martin Green, Niall Finnegan and John Rabbette stood out for the city side.
The Summer Scheme had a very successful week with a good number of boys and girls in attendance. Thanks to county coaches Kevin Hinphey and Ruairi Convery as well as all the club coaches who generously gave up their holidays to attend.

The clubs under 10s and under 12s took part in the Gavin McKinney and Damian McKinney/Paul Gurney Memorial Cup competitions on Saturday last in great weather conditions. With Steelstown, Limavady, Moville and Foreglen making up the teams this was a very successful day’s football. Our under 10s got to the final of the ‘A’ section and the ‘B’ section and both lost narrowly. The U-12 ‘A’ team played well but failed to make it out of the group’s and the U-12 ‘B’ were winners in their section. Some great performances from all involved. Banagher enjoyed a deserved win over Kevin Lynch’s in the semi-final of the County Championship at Ballinascreen on Sunday. They now go on to meet Swatragh in the Final.
Less than 24 hours since their Hurling Championship win over Kevin Lynch’s, Banagher had to field against Glen, Maghera in a vital football league relegation game. Banagher got off to an ideal start with a goal in the first minute from Eunan Murphy but Glen followed suit and found the net at the other end almost immediately. Another goal in the first half from Shane Farren and the half time score read 1-5 to 2-5 in Banagher’s favour. Banagher were in control of the play in the second half and went seven points up but they almost threw it away as Glen drew level with only 10 minutes to go. However Banagher scored four points in a row and emerged with a two point win and more importantly two league points when the game ended 3-9 to 3-11. Team: Darrel McDermott, Michael Anderson, Sean Marty Lockhart, Brian Murphy, Sean Mc Cullagh, Ryan Lynch, Oisin Mc Closkey, P J McCloskey (0-1), Mark Lynch (0-7, 3f), Conor Lynch, Pauric Murphy, Gavin O’Neill (0-2), Shane Farren (2-0), Eunan Murphy(1-1), Paul Cartin. The seniors’ journey toward a possible league title and promotion took another twist on Sunday last with a two point defeat to Sean Dolans at Brolly Park. The season now hinges on tomorrow night’s game against Bellaghy at home with a 7pm throw in. A win and we secure a play-off with Ardmore/Magherafelt for the Div 3 title and a promotion play-off with Ardmore to see who goes up to Intermediate football next season. Undoubtedly this is the most important game of our season and all support will be required to drag our lads over the line. This won’t be easy as Bellaghy are on a bit of a roll at the minute and would love nothing better than to stop our progression. It will be all hands to the pump tomorrow evening.

Training restarts tomorrow at 10am and new players are always welcolme.
Our minors bowed out of the championship at the semi-final stage last Monday night. The match against Coleraine was played in Limavady in the immediate aftermath of a thunderstorm and both teams did very well to serve up such good entertainment on a very wet pitch. Eoghan Roes raced into a six-point lead after 20 minutes but a goal from Niall Doherty cut the deficit to three points at the interval. Brian Ógs laid siege to the Coleraine goal in the second half and some excellent point-taking from Paul Ferris had Coleraine’s lead cut to a single point with 15 minutes to go. But a lapse in concentration let the Bannsiders in for another goal and though they again cut the lead to a single point, Steelstown just couldn’t find the vital scores. Coleraine were then awarded some simple frees and closed out the game by three points. Thanks to everyone who coached and helped out and also to all the children who attended our summer camp this week at the club, great fun was had by everybody!
