Carlow too good for Derry hurlers

DERRY hurlers were brought back to earth with a bump in Dr. Cullen Park on Sunday as Carlow ran out convincing 15-point winners to secure their place in the Division 2A Final.

Carlow 2-21

Derry 0-12

Ger Rogan’s men went into the game on the back of impressive displays against Wicklow and Down but had no answer to the pace and power of Kevin Ryan’s team.

Paddy Henry was again the Oak Leafers main attacking threat, registering 0-09 of his team’s total although every score came from a placed ball, such was the home side’s dominance.

As early as the 13th minute, six Carlow players were on the scoresheet and the writing was already on the wall for Rogan’s young team.

The Oak Leaf County employed a two-man full-forward line but could make no impact up front against a solid home full-back line of Alan Corcoran, Eoin Nolan and Des Shaw.

By half-time, Carlow were 1-11 to 0-2 ahead and Derry were in damage limitation territory. The spirited Oak Leafers enjoyed a good period at the beginning of the second half but Carlow reasserted command and three points wiped out any early Derry gains.

Carlow remained in general control for the remainder of the game. The final nail in the Derry coffin arrived late on when Carlow substitute Mark Brennan drilled home his side’s second goal.
