Glack expose Magilligan weaknesses
WHILE much of what Glack have done this season is down to the players, you’d have to credit this one to the men on the line.
For while Jason Canning had possibly the best game he’s ever played for the club, and while Niall McGowan was his normal self from the frees, the comfort of this win was down to the way in which they set up.
Magilligan’s improvement over the last couple of years has been built on a running game, based around fitness and pace from half-back up.
They were never given a chance to express it, to do what they’re good at, because Glack were prepared for it. Aaron O’Connor and John McLaughlin had them well set up, and Magilligan had no plan B.
Saturday’s win over Magilligan held plenty of promise, but it also held its worries too. Jimmy O’Connor’s return from suspension and the excellence of his two partners in the half-forward line were the big plusses. McGowan and Canning hit 3-06 of their team’s 3-08 between them.
But by contrast, they didn’t get enough out of their full-forward line. Now the inside forward line won its fair share of ball, but Oisin King and Jason Harrison registered just a point apiece, while Shane O’Connor failed to score. They will need a better return if they are to win championships. Magilligan will be disappointed by how things went and while they beat Ardmore in the league a few weeks ago, they would probably have rathered been drawn to face Drum in this weekend’s semi-final.
The game was of no real importance or significance to the ‘seasiders’, but that they were so comprehensively beaten will be a major dent to their confidence as they head into another semi-final, their third in six years.
