Chris Bounces Back at Strabane
Chris McDermott recorded a fine victory on Saturday in the Fletcher Golf Open at Strabane with an excellent 41 points in breezy conditions.
Having looked set to win the previous weekend until he encountered a disaster at the 15th hole, Chris made no similar mistake on this occasion closing out his round with a strong finish to take the honours by one point.
Full results were - 1, Chris McDermott (11) 41 points; 2, Eamon McGlinchey (17) 40; 3, break of tie, Cathal Patton (5) 38; 4, Paul Gallagher (8) 38; 5, Cathal McLaughlin, 38; gross, Stephen McCay (5) 32; front nine, Mickey Neeson, 22; back nine, Neil Alcock, 21.
The presentation for this event will be held tonight (Friday) at 7.30 p.m. sharp.
With none of the leading contenders in the race for the ‘Golfer of the Year’ title, things remained as they were with Ryan McGowan adding to his impressive golfing C.V. taking the title to add to his recent Club Championship win. Keith Patterson finished second with Peter Doherty in third spot.
Club Captain, Sean MacIntyre, showed a welcome return to form in Thursday’s Open event, kindly sponsored by local company, What’s on Your Wall?
Sean’s return of 43 points saw him win by one point from the in-form Robert Bell (13) with the third placed Kevin McGinley (11) finished with 41. The gross was won by Peter Doherty (5) with 31.
Last Sunday last saw the final Mixed Greensomes event of the year and was dominated by the husband and wife pairing of Olive and Eric Reid with 38 points over the 15 holes. They finished two clear of Caroline and Frankie Connolly with Noreen and Oliver McNally in third place with 35 pts.
The club draw took place last Saturday night in the clubhouse and results were - first prize, £3,000, Orla & Patricia Coyle; 2nd, Patsy Fullerton, £2.000; 3, Audrey Preston £1,000; 4, Seamus McGarrigle, £500; 5, Sean Callaghan, £400; 6, Geraldine Diver £300; 7, Agnes Devenney £200; £100 - Frances Harkin, Paul Duddy, John Quinn, John Wylie, Teresa McCauley and Ned and Shane (DOE).
The Captain’s outing takes place tomorrow to Greencastle with 140 members travelling to the Inishowen club and, everyone is asked to be punctual for their tee-off times.
The first tee has been booked from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. for the Greencastle players.

The first outing of the Portsalon Winter Links teed off on Saturday last and the event attracted a large turnout.
Results were - Nett Section - 1, break of tie, Donal McCafferty (13) 37 points; 2, Stephen Connolly (5) 37; 3, Paddy Sheridan (7) 36.

Union Golf Outing
St. Joseph’s Past Pupils’ Union will hold their annual golf outing at Greencastle on Saturday, October 20th with the first tee booked from 10.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon.
