McElhinney, Meehan Top Men at North-West
THE TALENTED pairing of David McElhinney and Willie Meehan took top honours in last weekend’s Winter League event at North-West, the Derry men returning the top score in the Two Man Scramble event.
Having combined well in the third week of the event, the McElhinney and Meehan team recorded 52 points to win by one point over runners-up, Declan and Conor Bradley.
Meanwhile, North-West’s opening Christmas Fare competition teed-off on Saturday last and the event saw high scoring the order of the day.
Mike McLaughin (24) returned the top score of 42 points, but it was his significant 25 points on the back nine which saw him emerge victorious in a tie-break verdict over Gary Mallett (12).
The C.S.S. was 70.
Another Christmas Fare competition is on offer tomorrow (Saturday) while the format for this Sunday’s Winter League a Fourball Better Ball event.
Buncrana Winter League
With the milder weather conditions last weekend there were quite a few excellent scores returned in the Owen McDaid (Roe) Minibus & Taxi Hire Winter League.
The best score of the weekend was recorded by the father & son combination of Cormac and Craig Doherty who played some excellent golf to shoot 45 points and take the weekly prize on a break of a tie from Mark Porter and Liam Lynch (J).
The Winter League will continue this weekend, over Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October.
Meanwhile, the Aileen Hallinan Memorial Three Days Teams of 4 Open Scramble will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday, October 27th, Sunday 28th & Monday 29th with proceeds in aid of the Donegal Hospice.
The weekly 9-hole competitions have now commenced and cards can be taken in conjunction with the Winter League fixtures. Qualifying for the Christmas Hamper has also commenced and the Christmas Hamper will take place over Saturday, December 8th & Sunday, December 9th.
The “Find the Joker” fund-raising effort is up and running with the prize fund now at E1,305. Lines cost E2 each and the Committee would appreciate it if members would buy a line or even help with the sale of a card.
There is a new 2013 membership deal available at present at Buncrana Golf Club.
Gents to pay E305 while ladies pay E205 now and play golf until March 2014 (17 months). Terms are a deposit with balance to be paid by instalments if wished.

City of Derry
Brian McClelland (13) was best of the day in the weekly Sunday Society competition at Prehen. A very well compiled 41 points doing the job.
Stephen Anderson (8) was the better of two players on 39 points thanks to a tie break falling in his favour with Alfie Kane (7) having to settle for third place.
Martin Duddy (15), the current holder of the “golfer of the year” title finished in fourth place just getting the verdict over Tony McCann (12) both players scoring 38 points once again a tie break deciding the issue.
Andy McFaul (9) was sixth with 37 points on a countback, no less than seven points behind his turkey winning score of the previous day.
