In the run up to the second annual firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon, children and teenagers aged 8 – 15 can rest assured that they don’t have to miss out on the fun. Organisers are giving our young sports fanatics the opportunity to take part in the firmus energy ‘TRYathlon’ on Sunday 22 June which will include running, cycling and swimming activities in the Templemore Sports Complex.
Organisers, which include Derry City Council, North West Triathlon Club and firmus energy, are calling for parents to register their children before Friday 20 June to ensure they don’t miss out.
Tommy McCallion, Derry City Council, Race organiser and member of North West Triathlon Club commented: “Following the success of last year’s ‘TRYathlon’, we have no doubt that this year will see another exciting day for young participants. It is a great achievement to complete a triathlon and this event will be no different. Everyone will receive a medal so it really is the taking part that matters. The main aim is to help encourage children to make sport part of a healthy lifestyle and to showcase what triathlon has to offer – you never know, they might go on to be the next Aileen Reid or Gavin Noble!”
All events are open to children aged 8-15 years with various distances for each group, which are as follows; Primary 8-11 years, Secondary A 11-13 years and Secondary B 14-15 years. There are 3 separate events that kids can choose from namely TRYathlon (Swim-Bike-Run) Duathlon (Run-Bike-Run) Aquathon (Swim-Run).
Angeline Sloan, marketing officer for firmus energy, sponsors of the event, added: “If any families are looking for something different to do this weekend this definitely fits the bill!
The TRYathlon is a great way for kids to have a go at a variety of sports and to get a taste of what triathlons are all about. It is light-hearted and non-competitive and we would encourage as many from the local community to come out and have a go as possible.
“We are delighted to be involved in the event this year again. The enthusiasm of all the participants was great to see and we look forward to another enjoyable event for all the family.”
The firmus energy TRYathlon will take place at the Templemore Sports Complex on Sunday 22 June, and children are being asked to come to the centre between 8.45am and 9.15am to get ready with the first events beginning 9.45am. The cost to take part is £8 for non Triathlon Ireland members and £5 for Triathlon Ireland members.
