As the closing date for entries for the 2012 Hughes Insurance Derry District Sports Council awards fast approaches, parents, clubs, teams and schools in the North West are urged to submit their nominations.
So far there has been a slow return of completed forms but it is hoped that people will remember the efforts of the sporting community over the past year and take time to put pen-to-paper.
The final date for entries is on Friday, January 25th at 12 noon and nomination forms are available from the local leisure centres and Derry City Council’s Development department.
Alternatively the forms can be downloaded online at www.derrycity.gov.uk/sportsawards
The Mayor, Councillor Kevin Campbell said the awards are a unique opportunity to acknowledge the role played by local sports people in the area.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to submit their nominations,” he said. “The sports awards are for all sports, all ages and talents and caters for coaches, team managers, physios and administrators and is a great way to encourage and inspire local talent in various sports.”
Brian McDowell, Head of Sales and Marketing at Hughes Insurance added that the awards are the perfect way to highlight the contribution of many people to local sport scene.
“It is so important to celebrate and encourage local sport and local talent,” said Mr McDowell. “In the aftermath of the Olympics it is vital we maintain our enthusiasm for sport at the grassroots to help nurture the young stars of the future.
“This is a great year for Derry, with the City of Culture in full swing and what looks to be the biggest Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup ever enroute – making it crucial to recognise and reward worthy local teams and individuals for their continued contribution to community sport.
“As title sponsors of this year’s Derry District Sports Council Awards we would urge you to get nominating.”
This year’s event is sponsored for the second year by Hughes Insurance and the award ceremony will be held in the City Hotel on Friday, February 15th starting at 7.30 p.m.
