40 Players Bound for Majorca Tour

A TOTAL of 40 players, representing golf clubs from throughout the North-West and further afield, will contest the prestigious Travellers’ Trophy on the 35th year of the Michael Doherty tour to Majorca.

The tournament is again being organised by City of Derry Past Captain, Andy Meenagh and the 72 holes tournament gets underway on Monday next, May 14th.

Of those taking part this year, 19 are from City of Derry; seven from North-West; three from Greencastle with the remaining 11 players drawn from clubs in Newtownstewart, Portsalon, Gweedore, Highgate (London), Cork, Ballynahinch, Portadown and two from the Joondalup Club in Australia.

Mr Willie Barrett, a long-standing tour party member, will again travel as the non-playing official.

A total of eight past winners of this coveted tournament are travelling this year. Three time winners Colm McCarroll (North-West) and Maurice Brennan (Greencastle) will be hoping to be the second ever player to win it at least four times, the most successful winner ever was City of Derry’s Liam McCaul who won the tournament on five occasions between 1979 and 1984.

As is traditional on this tour, the 10 teams of four will play together on the first day before breaking up into the open format of the tournament over the following three days.

The post-tour dinner and presentation of prizes will take place on Saturday, June 2nd, at City of Derry Golf Club.

Prizes will again be for the top 10 individuals over the four days; the top three individuals each day and for the top three teams over the four days.

Prehen Progress in

Fred Daly Trophy

City of Derry’s Fred Daly Team eased into the next round when defeating Gweedore 10.5 to 3.5. Requiring just one point to secure victory in the second leg, Dan Hinds playing in the opening match won 5&3.

The Prehen club will now face Mourne or Cliftonville in the next round.

Results from Foyle’s Friday Open Stableford - 1, Marc Power (25) 38 points; 2, break of tie, Colin Smyth (14) 37.

The second of the season’s Over-50’s competitions was played on Thursday last with Matt Donnell (10) taking top honours after a break of tie with 36 points.

Phoenix Golf Society

Niall McDermott claims top honours in the Phoenix Golf Society’s recent outing to Greencastle on May 5th last.

Full results were - 1, Niall McDermott, 36 points; 2, Danny Carlin, 34; 3, Maeliosa Barr, 33; front nine, Vincent Glen, 18; back nine, Daniel Harkin, 17.

The next outing will take place at North-West Golf Club, Lisfannon, on Saturday, May 26th.

The first tee has been booked for 11.00 a.m. sharp and members are urged to arrive in good time to ensure the smooth running of the competition.

Green Fee Discount for

N.W. Clubs at Ballyliffin

Ballyliffin Golf Club has anounced a Discounted Greenfee Scheme for members of all Donegal clubs.

Full Members and Lady Members of GUI affiliated Donegal clubs, including City of Derry, Foyle and Strabane, will now be entitled to a 50 per cent discount on Summer Green Fee rates on both Championship Links at the Inishowen club.

These reduced green fee rates will be available both on weekdays and on weekends, subject to advance booking and availability.

Tee times must be booked in advance and the only requirement from club members is that they produce a current GUI Membership Card on the day of play.
