ATHLETICS: Primary Schools Cross Country finalists decided

The third and final round of the local Flavahans Primary schools cross country League took place last Friday and the qualifiers for next month’s NI finals at Mallusk emerged after a trio of well supported and exciting races at Thornhill College, St Columb’s Park and Templemore Sports Complex.

A surprisingly bright and dry day last Friday brought around 200 runners to a sticky Sports Complex circuit where Steelstown’s Cara Laverty made it three wins from three in the Girls 1.4K race and St Anne’s Oisin Gallagher notched his second win of the series.

In a very tight team race the St Therese Boys squad edged out Broadbridge for the on the day honours with St Annes grabbing their first podium team finish. The best of two performances from the three races saw Broadbridge, St Therese and Oakgrove Boys teams qualify for the NI Finals.

Oakgrove, Broadbridge and Hollybush were the top three finishers in the Girls team race last Friday and also finished in that order in the overall qualifying positions for next month’s finals.

The top five individuals outside of the qualifying team members will also travel to Mallusk next month and the boys are:

Oisin Gallagher and Patrick McLaughlin of St Anne’s; St Patrick’s Oisin Colhoun and Mark McDaid and Sam McKeever of Sacred Heart PS.

The five Girls are, Cara Laverty, Steelstown; Toni McCool of St Therese; Caoirse Doherty of Long Tower; St Anne’s Ciara Doherty and Chloe O’Neill of Mullabuoy PS.
