GOLF IN the North-West area received a significant boost this week following the publication of the annual “Golf Digest” top ranked 100 courses in Ireland.
And while the local area boasts so many top class facilities, the continued efforts of Ballyliffin to upgrade the club’s two courses has reaped handsome dividends.
In fact, the Glashedy Links has moved up three places to 13th position in the top 100 Irish courses, but the most significant move is associated with the club’s Old Links which has climbed no fewer than 10 places and is now resting in 22nd spot.
Therefore, with one local club boasting two courses in the top 25 - Ballyliffin’s commitment to providing quality facilities appears to be destined for a place in the top 10 in the years to come.
A number of other Donegal clubs have also made good strides in this season’s listings with Donegal Golf Club (Murvagh) moving up three places to claim 16th position while the recent improvements at Portsalon have also been recognised as the ‘Kingdom’ club climbed up eight places and is now ranked 27th on the list.
Narin & Portnoo G.C. also made significant strides having moved into the top 50, the Donegal course moving up eight places to claim 43rd spot, while Rosapenna’s Sandy Hills track dropped four places to 25th place in the top 100.
The top three courses in Ireland remain the same with Royal County Down, Portmarnock and Royal Portrush again voted the top three in that order ahead of Waterville, Ballybunnion, Lahinch and Tralee.
First launched eight years ago, “Golf Digest Ireland’s” official course rankings has become a popular marketing tool for local clubs.
