Foyle Valley Athletics Club will stage its popular annual five mile ‘Wilkie’s Run’ next Thursday, May 23th in memory of the late Foyle Valley AC member, Colm Wilkinson.
The race, which takes place along the cycle path adjacent to the River Foyle, is open to everyone from the veteran athlete to the novice runner while walkers are also welcome. Registration takes place on the evening of the run at Long Tower Youth Centre, Brandywell from 6 p.m.
Foyle Valley Club Secretary, Denise Doherty claims the race will provide the ideal preparation for those training for next month’s Walled City Marathon.
“The Wilkie’s race is ideal for those who are training for the Walled City Marathon as they can practice their race pace over the five miles, which is also part of the marathon course,” she said.
“It is also perfect for those new to running as it is a straight-forward, fixed-distance and flat run. You are also very welcome to come along and walk 5km.
“Running has truly exploded in Derry over the past year with the announcement of the Walled City Marathon and the foundation of community based running clubs, BOLT and ‘Born to Run’,” she added.
“There are more and more people pounding the pavements of this town than ever before.”
Entry fee for Wilkie’s Run is £10.00, this includes a quality technical T-shirt for the first 120 people to enter.
Refreshments for all entrants will be provided at Long Tower Youth Centre after the race. Prizes will be awarded for the categories in the run only. All money raised will be distributed between three nominated charities.
Last year over £1,000 was raised in total with over 120 entrants taking part. Foyle Valley hopes that many newcomers will participate this year to maintain the great success of the event and to support these good causes.
