This weekend’s National Senior Indoors Championships in the magnificent Athlone IT Arena moves the focus from the recent spate of big road and cross country action and, hopefully, will yield a significant and successful performance over 3,000m for local star, Connor Bradley.

With his wedding to Laura set for Saturday, February 28th, the Spartan has been busy but still managed to take in Wednesday night’s Deloitte Indoor Mile in Athlone and will travel there again for Sunday’s championship action.

The 3,000m field is loaded with top Irish names all out to grab National honours and impress the selectors in advance of the upcoming European Indoor Championships in Prague with Paul Pollock and John Travers already having qualifying times for 3,000m and 1,500m respectively.

Sub four minute miler Ciaran O’Lioniard is also in the classy field and seeking a European qualifying time.

The local man has recently run 8m 10secs for the Indoors 3,000m, some six seconds shy of his best for the distance and with a quality field and an honest pace from the gun, going close to the eight minute mark will be his target at the weekend.

Injury disrupted his training and consequently his performances recently but he has the class to deliver a much awaited big one in Athlone.

Letterkenny’s Danny Mooney already with a 1,500m qualifying time achieved is seen as favourite for the metric mile this weekend and another Letterkenny man, Mark English will race over 800m in England on Saturday before travelling to Athlone for Sunday’s 800m Final. He has yet to get the necessary European qualifying time but expect that to be rectified this weekend.

There will be some other local athletes in Athlone action so good luck to all of them.

The ongoing North West Triathlon Club’s Winter 5K series continues this Sunday with a 10.30am start on the usual riverside course and the postponed Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships and Primary Schools Finals will bring all the qualifying local schools and pupils to Mallusk on Tuesday next February 24th for a shot at glory.
