Big turnout for Lunn’s Jewellers’ AM-AM at City of Derry Golf Club

Prehen member, Brian Peoples (21) now playing out of Royal Portrush used his local knowledge to great effect to take top honour in City of Derry Golf Club’s Thursday Open competition with a winning total of 42 points.

Graham Robb (6) finished on 40 points to claim second place while third and fourth places were taken by Peter Hasson (5) and Iain Anthony (5) respectively - both players scoring 39 points with the tie break falling in Peter’s favour. Lester Moore (1) too the best gross with 37 points.

Meanwhile. the very popular AM-AM, sponsored by Lunn’s the Jewellers from Shipquay Street and Belfast, attracted a very large entry at City of Derry.

Best of the 45 teams that competed were led by Gary Leckey, ably assisted by George Pearson, Wyn Donnell and Thomas O’Neill with a very impressive two round total of 184 (91 and 93).

Faughan Valley members, Billy Hutchman, Alan Gault, Ian Dunn and Conor McKnight finished as runners-up with 182 (94 and 88). Third place overall was taken by Brendan Duffy, Kevin Green and two visitors from Greencastle, Ryan O’Doherty and Kris McMorriss on 181 (91 and 90).

Day one was won by Brian Burns, Graham Hepburn, Dan McAnulla and Jerome Moore with 92 and best on Day Two went to the team led by Stephen Orr, Richard Peoples, Gareth Reid and Phillip Brady who travelled all the way from Abu Dhabi to compete.

Roe Park round-up

Roe Park Resort continues to see huge numbers turn out as another very busy week saw an Open Stableford, four club competitions and two Society Open days.

First up was an Open Stableford on Monday with some fantastic prizes on offer provided by sponsors, Drenagh Sawmills.

With the course playing long in blustery conditions up stepped big hitting Jamie Vinnicombe to take the win with a fine display.

Jamie had a solid round until the wheels came off at holes 12 and 13 but composed himself to par four of the last five holes to record 39 points.

Derek Nicholl also had a solid round of 39 points to take second spot and will rue missed opportunities on the last three holes as he was just beaten on countback

There were two club competitions on Thursday with a Club Stableford and the Walworth Cup for the over-50s sponsored by The Spa at Roe Park.

The Club Stableford was won by Andy Young, who has started to find form again at just the right time scoring an impressive 43 points. Gavin Logue, another much improved member is having a fine season indeed scoring 42 points which included consecutive birdies at the 6th and 7th holes. Cathal McNicholl claimed third with 41 points.

The Walworth Cup was won by Paul Cobb who shot a superb round scoring 44 points which included eight straight pars and two consecutive birdies at holes 14 & 15. Andy Cameron scored 42 points to take second place and Father, Liam McClarey scored 41 points to take third. Martin Rafferty won the gross prize with Willie Scott winning the Front 9 prize and Joe Connor the Back 9 prize. John Harron and Gareth Jones won the nearest the pin prizes.

The July Monthly Medal saw a huge turnout on Saturday as the warm weather continued to provide excellent conditions.

Results - 1, Joe McCloskey 63 nett; 2, Conor Kelly; 3, Andy Young.

Kieran Berryman sits on top of the Golfer of the Year leader board with 102 points, but will now be looking over his shoulder as Andy Young finds his early season form to make a late charge.

Andy, currently on 76 points will look to put the pressure on Kieran in the coming weeks as he has closed the gap now from 49 points to just 26. With both men in scintillating form at the moment it makes for an exciting run-in.

Roe Park travelled to Ballyliffin for their second round match in the North West Inter Club League hoping for a good result away from home.

The team put in a valiant effort and were narrowly beaten 4-3. Up next is The Resort Cup followed by a 4Ball Better Ball sponsored by O’Kanes Service Station.
