Billy Harley struck a blow for the high handicappers at Greencastle on Sunday last, the 24 handicapper returning the top score of 41 points.

However, he had to survive a break of tie with Frank Kelly (11) who matched Billy’s score and the winner was decided over the final six holes.

Billy recorded four pars on the front nine before boosting his score with an eagle ‘2’ at the second last hole. Meanwhile, Frank carded a birdie “3” at the 7th hole which gave him four of his 41 points.

Third place was secured by Gerry Guckian (14) with 40 points.

Willie Havlin claimed the gross prize for a one over par round of 35 points, and the ‘nines’ were won by Kevin Cassidy (23 pts. on front nine) and Charlie Barr (20 pts. on back nine).

On Saturday last, big hitting Seamus Mullan (16) made short work of the Inishowen course when amassing a superb score of 45 points. Birdies at two of the three par fives and a further sub par score at the seventh gave him a winning margin of three points.

Also returning several birdies - four to be exact - was Tommy McBride (5) on his way to a one under par round for 42 points.

Forty-one points was needed for third place and this was returned by John Paul O’Doherty (11). This continues his excellent run of form over the recent months and sees his handicap drop another shot to 10.

Paul Wallace won the gross prize with 31 points, Seamus McLaughlin won the front nine with 22 and Paul McMahon was the winner of the back nine, also with 22 points.

The winner of the ladies prize was Maureen Keys (20) with 34 points.

This weekend’s competition is a Ladies & Gents Singles Stableford tomorrow (Saturday) with a Singles Stableford on offer this Sunday.

St. Joseph’s PP Union

Golf Outing

The St. Joseph’s Past Pupils’ Union is holding it’s annual golf outing at Greencastle tomorrow (Saturday) where the first tee has been booked from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Due to the fact that the school is celebrating its 50th anniversary, it is hoped that all golfers who have been associated with the school can participate. The event is open to all past pupils, teaching staff and auxiliary staff. The competition will be an Open Singles Stableford.

Foyle Winter League

Almost 30 teams have teed-off in the annual qualifying for the Desmond Motors Winter League at Foyle.

However,with the qualifying running until early December, there is more than enough time left for additional teams to enter the tournament.

The top eight teams to qualify will contest the Grand Final and compete for the four prizes on offer with the winners receiving G15 Drivers.

In the first week, scoring was very good with the formidable Team 24, made up of Mark Doherty, Jim McFadden, Ciaran O’Doherty and Dermot Harkin, returned a superb score of 98 points to hold a one point lead over Team 21.

Excellent Start For

Foyle Sunday Society

The popular Foyle Sunday Society got their new season off to an an excellent start with 60 members now taking part in the second week of competition and again the competitors enjoyed a decent day with some fine scores returned.

The top card of the day was that of Oran Canning who struck a blow for the high handicappers when he returned 42 points to enjoya two points cushion over the chasing pack.

Full results were - 1, Oran Canning (25) 42 points; 2, break of tie, Paul McEleney (11) 40; 3, Sean Rankin (20) 40.

The Desmond Motors Winter League continues daily as do the turkey competitions.

Tomorrow (Saturday), September 20th, the Two Bridges Cup will be staged been Foyle and Faughan Valley Golf Clubs at 1.00 p.m.
