Sunday past was a historic day for Maydown Olympic ABC as young Cahir Gormley claimed the club’s first ever Ulster title in the Crossmaglen Rangers Social Club in Armagh.

Cahir defeated the tough Ronan O’Reilly from the St. John Bosco Club in Newry to claim the ‘Boy 2 39kg’ division in what was a hard fought contest.

“Cahir boxed very well in the final against a tough, strong opponent in Ronan O’Reilly,” explained Olympic Head Coach Sean Devenney, “We had done our homework before the contest and knew he was going to put Cahir under pressure but Cahir stuck to the game-plan and boxed very well off the back foot to get the win.

“Cahir has had an excellent season so far having claimed several titles along the way including Derry, Donegal, Northwest and an Ulster 9 Counties Title. It’s testament to the hard work and dedication he’s shown over the past few months.”

Despite his success, Cahir won’t have time to dwell on his victory as his attentions now turn to All Ireland glory at the up coming National Championships in Dublin in a few weeks time where he will hope to claim both his and the club’s first Irish Title.
