THE Owen McDaid (Roe) Minibus & Taxi Hire Winter League commenced last weekend and given the difficult weather conditions scoring was difficult.

However, the elements didn’t seem to deter two of the pairings - John Doherty and Sean T. Murphy and Sean McMenamin and Martin McLaughlin - who returned 44 points. Thanks to a superior back nine, John and Sean T. secured the weekly prize.

The Winter League will not be staged this weekend as the annual Drift Inn Bar & Restaurant Outing will take place on Saturday, October, 6th.

There will be a nine holes competition for members on Saturday with the last tee time at 9:00 a.m. and all day Sunday, October 7th.

The Winter League will then recommence on Saturday and Sunday, October 13th and 14th and with just four scores to count from six rounds, it’s not too late for members who may have missed the first week to participate.

There will also be at least two Fridays available for players to return scores, which in turn alleviates the pressure on players to participate every weekend.

The qualifying competitions for the Christmas Hamper have now commenced and the Christmas Hamper will take place over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, December 8th and 9th.

The “Find the Joker” fund-raising effort is up and running with the prize fund now at E1,270. Lines cost E2 each.

There is a new 2013 membership deal currently available - gents pay E305 while ladies pay E205 now and play golf until March 2014 (17 months).

The next meeting of the Committee will take place tonight (Tuesday) at 7:00 p.m. sharp all committee members are requested to attend. Club Captain, Mr. Daniel Lynch, President Mr. Paul Eccles and Lady Captain, Mrs. Marian Simpson. will host a nine holes competition this Sunday, October 7th at 3:00 p.m. The competition is open to all Captains, Presidents, Lady Captains past and present. The idea behind this competition is to recognise the contributions made by various officials over the years whether they are members at present or not and it would be appreciated if as many as possible would attend.

There will be light refreshments afterwards in the clubhouse and it will be a chance for past officials to meet the present officials.

High Handicappers

to Fore

Gerry Webb (24) achieved his maiden victory at Prehen and did it in fine style with a well compiled 42 points in last Saturday’s Confined Stableford.

A steady 20 points on the way out and an even better 22 points on the back nine gave him a two points victory over runner-up, Dermot Hegarty (23). Dermot was very happy to make any appearance on the podium and hopes to continue his good form into the Winter season.

Paul McIntyre (17) needed the benefit of a better back nine to take the third place with 39 points, the highlight of his round being a birdie two at “The Quarry” which yielded no less than four points.

Meanwhile, Prehen members and visitors alike are reminded that the Winter Quiz Night resumes tomorrow night (Wednesday), October 3rd and every Wednesday and all are welcome. Pat Logue is the genial quizmaster.

Prizes for the City of City of Derry Building Society sponsored Order of Merit will be presented on Friday, October 26th, at 7.00 p.m.

The top 10 in that competition are invited to attend. Further details are available on the club website www.cityofderrygolfclub.com
