CITY OF Derry’s Mixed Foursomes team made history in Athlone last Friday when the Prehen club secured its first Senior All-Ireland Senior Pennant after a titanic battle against Curra West in the final.
Sean Quigg and Liz Allen put the first point on the board for the Prehen club with a 5&4 win over Colin Donohue and Mary Kelly. But Curra West replied almost instantly when Leo Kelly and Ann Fahy scored a 4&3 win against Kevin Quigg and Gerda Laird in the top match.
The other three matches were evenly poised mid-way through the back nine and all three were eventually decided on the final green.
Peter Villa and Catherine McCanney edged City of Derry in front again with a 1 hole win over Packie Ryan and Martina McDonagh before Curra West levelled things again with a 2 holes victory for Kevin Cooney and Mary McDonagh over Ernie Heywood and Rosie Short.
All eyes were on the last and deciding match in which the City of Derry pairing of Cormac McKeone and Ciara Quigg were 2 up through 16 against Frank Donohue and Carmel Cunningham. The Curra pairing then won the 17th hole to bring the match down the par four 18th, a hole on which they were receiving one shot.
Both Carmel Cunningham and Ciara Quigg played perfect tee shots down the left hand side of the fairway and Curra West’s Frank Donohue played a fine approach which settled in front of the green.
City of Derry’s Cormac McKeone hooked his approach shot left towards trouble but a fortuitous deflection off a large tree saw the ball end up in the right hand greenside bunker.
Carmel Cunningham was unlucky to see her chip shot taking a severe break on a swale in the green to end up in the same greenside bunker which handed the advantage to the Prehen club.
And a marvellous 20 yards bunker shot from Ciara Quigg, to just six feet, left the Ulster champions with two putts for the title and they duly obliged.
Full results were - Kevin Quigg (3) & Gerda Laird (19), lost to Leo Kelly (11) & Ann Fahy (19) 4&3; Sean Quigg (3) & Liz Allen (25) defeated Colin Donohue (12) & Mary Kelly (24) 5&4; Peter Villa (12) & Catherine McCanney (13) defeated Packie Ryan (15) & Martina McDonagh (17) 1 hole; Ernie Heywood (1) & Rosie Shortt (24) lost to Kevin Cooney (15) & Mary McDonagh (22) 2 holes; Cormac McKeone (4) & Ciara Quigg (17) defeated Frank Donohue (15) & Carmel Cunningham (16) 1 hole.
The Prehen club’s Lady Captain, Naoimh Quigg, extended her thanks on behalf of the team to the City of Derry Club for the support throughout the competition with a special thanks to Da Vinci’s Hotel and McCambride-Duffy for their support in Athlone.
