Declan Reed continued his build up for the Berlin Marathon in September with a decent 51m 56s runners-up finish in Sunday’s Monaghan 10 mile road race.

Reed’s time was just six seconds behind the defending champion Freddy Sittuk’s 51m 50s and, on a very warm day, comfortably ahead of the third placed Connor Duffy of Glasslough Harriers who posted 52m 52s.

The City of Derry runner found the Dublin based Kenyan had just that little extra in the hot conditions but given his recent injury niggles he has to be happy with his 10,000m track 31m 25s the previous weekend in Dublin and Sunday’s decent effort.

The resurgent Christy McMonagle took the M70 age group win in 76m 08s while Una Gavin followed up her Dunkineely 10K win on Saturday with a 78m 38s run on Sunday to finish third F55. Foyle Valley’s Stephen Connor was seventh overall with a 57m 56ss clocking.

At the Mary Peters track on Saturday meantime, the City of Derry Spartans juvenile squad finished fifth in the NI Youth Development League final, replicating their position after the three rounds of the T&F League for U13/15/17 athletes
