Close call as Laird lands Lady Captain’s Charity Open at City of Derry

GERDA Laird defeated Naoimh Quigg on a break of tie to claim last Tuesday’s Lady Captain’s Charity Open (Rosaleen McAnualla) in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Played in favourable conditions on a perfectly manicured course, Gerda’s score of 38 points was matched by Naoimh, however, the 16 handicapper claimed top honours thanks to a superior back nine score.

The event was kindly sponsored by Cable & Accessories.

Next Tuesday’s competition is Mr. John Hasson President’s Prize to the Ladies Branch.

Foyle Ladies

Recent results from Foyle Ladies Branch - Thursday, August 1st, 18 holes Stableford – 1, Lorna Thompson (17) 38 points; 2, Anne Hamilton (14) 36.

Lorna Thompson won the July Monthly Medal competition which was played on Thursday, July 25th having returned the top score of 72 nett.

Winner of 20’s competition No. 248 was Sadie O’Kane (21) with 25 points; No. 249 competiton – Anne Hamilton (14) 28 points.

Foyle Lady Captain, Mrs. Faye McGrotty, will host her Lady Captain’s Day next Friday and the ladies are invited for light refreshments and golf from 10.00 a.m.

The Lady Captain’s Dinner and Presentation of Prizes will follow the golf at 8.00 p.m. sharp.

The Ladies Branch extends their best wishes to Faye and her family for a successful day.

Buncrana Ladies

Jean Fitzpatrick coped best in the blustery conditions at Buncrana on Friday last, the 22 handicapper returning an excellent winning score of 39 points.

Full results were - Singles Stablefore - August 2nd - 1, Jean Fitzpatrick (22) 39 points; 2, Moya Jane O’Doherty (27) 33; gross, Margaret McColgan (14) 15; best 34+ handicapper, Evelyn Smith (36) 24.

Meanwhile, the Buncrana Ladies Branch will play for Mr. President’s Prize (Paul Eccles) today (Friday).

he presentation of prizes for that event will take place in the Clubhouse on Sunday evening, August 25th.

Redcastle Ladies

Results from Redcastle Ladies Confined Stroke, which was staged on Monday last, August 5th - 1, Jennie Flanagan; 2, Gill Eakin; 3, Audrey McGurk.

Next week’s competition is the Bank of Ireland Cup (Stableford). Please note change in draw times - 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. sharp.

Strabane Ladies

The Lady Herdman Cup was up for grabs in last week’s Ladies Day at Strabane and Roisin Corry took top honours with a score of 67 nett in tough conditions.

Full results were - Singles Stroke - 1, Roisin Corry 67 nett; Category 1, Rouse, 71; Category 2, Donna Doherty, 75.

The Wednesday night mixed event was cancelled due to the weather but regular mixed players should note that the Annual Sausage Sizzle Fun Evening will take place on Wednesday, August 14th.

Dunfanaghy Ladies

Dunfanaghy Open Week commenced on July 24th last with the first of the ladies competitions staged on Thursday, July 25.

Results were - 1, Hazel Russell (18) 40 points; 2, Michelle Wilson (36) 39; gross, Amy Chambers (5) 32; 3, break of tie, Jill McCorkell (24) 38; first nine, break of tie, Maggie Logue (18) 21; second nine, Nora Crumlish (22) 21; nearest the pin and longest drive, Kerry Eakin; visitor, Moira McGee.

The C.S.S. was 69 (36 pts.)
