GETTING off to a poor start appears to have become the recipe for success, if recent results are anything to go by at North-West golf Club!
In fact the talent that is Darren Kelly maintained that train of thought when, after the opening two holes, he had accumulated just two points.
However, the 14 handicapper is made of sterner stuff these days and he refocused to accumulate an additional 40 points over the remaining 16 holes for a winning score of 42 points.
A blistering back nine of 25 points was highlighted by an “ace” at the par three 16th hole, Darren using his trusty pitching wedge for the perfect golf shot.
In second place, just one point adrift, was John S. Murphy who also enjoyed a stunning back nine of 25 points, but he came unstuck with what was a costly double bogey at the penultimate hole.
In third place, also on 41 points, was 13 handicapper, Jimmy McGee.
Meanwhile, the evergreen Jimmy McFadden proved to be a popular winner in Week One of the new North-West Sunday Society.
An excellent front nine which saw him record 23 points was followed by a further 19 on the way home and the top score of 42 points.
Despite dropping a shot at the par four 15th hole, Jimmy rallied to add nine points over the final three holes. The 15 handicapper also had five “3’s” on his card, not a easy task on the Lisfannon links.
In second place on 40 points was 14 handicapper, Ronan McKinley, needing a birdie at the 18th hole Ronan could only muster a bogey and had to settle for second spot.
In third place was the in-form Winter League ‘doubles’ champion Patrick Duffy (12) who carded 23 points on the front nine. Patrick appeared set for another resounding victory, but with “blanks” at the 13th and 14th holes he was in trouble. That said, had he managed to birdie the 18th he would taken first spot but a disappointing bogey saw him having to settle for third place.
The Sunday Society also had a section for the Ladies Branch and an excellent turnout of ladies saw Shelia Reid take top spot with 17 points over the nine holes.
The runner-up was Margaret McLaren with 15 points.
