PLAYING off the back markers not to mention having to contend with a blustery wind, Hugh Doran, hit the headlines at North-West when winning the annual McConnell Cup on Sunday last.

Despite recording blanks at the 9th and 11th holes, the 21 handicapper still managed to return a super score of 40 points to claim top honours.

As a result of his tremendous effort, Hugh’s handicapper is now reduced to 19.

In second spot, one point adrift, was David Robb (16) and he will regret taking a bogey at the 18th when a par would have saw him claim the trophy.

An indifferent front nine, negotiated in 41 shots was offset by a superb back nine of level par 35 to secure the gross prize for Padraig MacLochlainn with a 76.

Third place was claimed by Declan Bradley (12) with 37 points and the highlight of Declan’s round was a birdie ‘3’ at the tough par four 15th.

The winner of the back nine prize with 21 pts. was Karol Friel.

Meanwhile, in last week’s Tuesday Open “Meal Deal,” the pressure of office does not appear to have had any affect on the Lisfannon club’s new President, Mr. Eamonn MacManus who defeated a former Captain, Pat Mackey, following a break of tie with both players having returned scores of 40 points.

This weekend’s competitions include a Charity Confined Stableford is aid of “Turn The Tide of Suicide.” The Stroke event to be played off the white tees.

Meanwhile, the Qualifying round for the GUI’s Jimmy Bruen competition will be staged at Lisfannon this Sunday with the course closed to non-competitors until 2.00 p.m.
