Following the huge success of the Clipper sailing event last year, many people in the Derry area will now be aware of the Lough Foyle Yacht Club which is based on their own door steps at Culmore Point.
Last July, the 10 skippers of the clipper boats took part in a traditional boat race, where they raced Foyle punts belonging to different club members. After three races, the overall winner was Edinburgh, Inspiring Capital. There was a huge turnout of spectators and Robin Knox-Johnston, Chairman of the Clipper organisation, later said it was one of the high points of the Clipper experience.
Lough Foyle Yacht Club sail mostly modern sailing dinghies, and are very keen to welcome new members. They are currently offering a ‘Taste of Sailing Series’ evenings designed to introduce the thrill of sailing to the wider public.
