Foyle Cycling Club topped off a fantastic year by holding off stiff competition to claim the Donegal Inter-Club Road Race league title for the first time in its 10-year history

Up against Errigal, Donegal Bay, Four Masters, North Pole and Strabane and Lifford Cycling Clubs, race winners for Foyle included Ronan McLaughlin, Thomas McLaughlin and Ryan Reilly. However Ryan’s results were controversially disallowed after two rounds following his move to French Club, AC Bisontine, a decision which relegated Foyle down the order after initially leading.

In the final tally, a displaced rider was moved two places up the ranks leaving last year’s winners, Errigal, who were provisionally announced 2015 winners, third with North Pole moved in second by the slimmest of margins.

With six rounds run, one by each of the clubs, the format was changed slightly this year to also include a Team Time Trial at the spectacular Barnesmore Gap in which the Foyle won the ‘B’ competition. The last round was run by Strabane and Lifford CC a couple of weeks ago and the surprise and welcome announcement made last weekend.

“Foyle CC is extremely proud of becoming outright Inter Club Champions for the first time,2 said Foiyle Chairman Simon Gill, “Overcoming the fierce competition was extremely difficult but the victory is testament to team spirit, hard work and persistence and has bonded the whole group and Club together even further. Well done to all of the riders and managers who took part.

“Every rider contributed to the win. Cycling is very much a team sport and Team Foyle pulled off a great win. We would like to acknowledge the efforts of Colin Boyle of Strabane and Lifford Cycling Club, who co-ordinated the league and ran an excellent competiton.”

The Foyle squad was; Eamon Doherty, Danny Logue, Ryan Reilly, Ronan McLaughlin, Lawrence Watson, Chris McElhinney, Simon Gill, Niall McElhinney, Jim Donnelly, Terry McLaughlin, Aaron Ellis, Conrad Wynne, Ciaran Hampson, Sammy McFadden, Richie Sheerin, Alan Harkens, John Quigley, Geoff Reilly, Gary Mellon, Sean Nash, Gavin O’Neill, Robert Curry, Diarmuid Grant, Daniel McCallion, David Doherty, Fergal McGeady, Diarmuid O’Donnell, David Doherty, Paul Bradley, Thomas McLaughlin, Mark McKinney and Mark Moroney.
