Derry middleweight Connor Coyle is just one fight away from securing a medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after claiming a unanimous decision victory over Dennis Thomas of Guyana this afternoon.
The slick puncher from St Joseph’s ABC won the third and deciding round with a classy display against his 25 year-old opponent at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.
Coyle impressed in the opening round and was given the verdict by all three judges. However, the Derry man took his foot off the gas in the second round, inviting Thomas on and the judges handed the Guyanan the round.
Into the deciding round and Coyle made no mistake against the tiring Thomas with good work to the head and body throughout and he had his hand deservedly raised in victory in the end.
Coyle now joins fellow Derry man, Sean McGlinchey in the last eight in their respective divisions - both fighters just one step away from securing at least a bronze medal!
The St Joseph’s ABC clubman takes on South African, Siphiwe Lusizi in the last eight bout on Wednesday evening.
Read tomorrow’s ‘Derry Journal’ to find out how McGlinchey wants to silence his critics with victory in his quarter-final bout on Tuesday evening.
