GREENCASTLE Golf Club members and the close-knit local community were ‘shocked’ and ‘saddened’ to learn of the sudden passing of their esteemed former Captain and President, Thomas ‘Tucker’ Doherty last Sunday morning following a short illness.

A long-standing and highly popular member, Thomas, had been serving as Trustee of the club and was Captain in 1990 and President in 2013.

His association with Greencastle goes back many years and his wife, Helena, is currently the club’s Lady President.

The affection in which Thomas was held was due in no small measure to his often outspoken, but always humorous, opinions on every topic of conversation.

The sympathy of all at Greencastle is extended to Helena and the extended Doherty family.

May he rest in peace.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s Ladies and Gents Open attracted a very large entry with the numbers boosted by the Captain’s outing from Newtownstewart.

Indeed, three of the Newtownstewart visitors found themselves among the winners, but it was 2016 Eclectic winner, Billy Kerr who scooped the top prize.

Billy carded a great 41 points to win by one from Paul Harvey in second place. Full results were: Ladies and Gents Open Singles Stableford, Saturday, September 10th – 1, Billy Kerr (19) 41; 2, Paul Harvey (14) 40; 3. John Kavanagh (14) Newtownstewart 39; Gross, Jon Jack (5) Newtownstewart 29; 1st 9, Sean Glackin (9) Newtownstewart 23; 2nd 9, Russell Davidson (12) 22.

Blustery winds on Sunday made the links at Greencastle a tough test and local man Johnny Harvey coped best with the conditions when shooting 37 points to win by one from Damien Harkin and Shane McDermott. Johnny’s birdie three at Sweet Nellie’s proved to be decisive in the final shake-up.

Full results were: Gents Open Singles Stableford, Sunday, September 11th – 1, Johnny Harvey (13) 37; 2, Damien Harkin (10) 36; 3, Shane McDermott (21) 36; Gross, Willie Havlin (5) 30; 1st 9, Cathal Langan (12) 21; 2nd 9, Paddy Rigney (26) 19.

This weekend’s events include a Ladies and Gents Open Singles tomorrow (Saturday) and the Hassan Cup Gents Open Singles on Sunday.
