ONE OF the most popular Open Weeks in North-West Golf tees-off tomorrow and, no doubt Greencastle Golf Club, will experience busy fairways over the week ahead with the weather blieved to be favourable.

The Open Week programme tees-of with the Total Golf sponsored Ladies & Gents Open singles Stableford tomorrow (Sat.) followed by the Kelly’s Eurospar Singles Stroke on Sunday, June 3rd.

Monday and Tuesday’s competitions are both Gents’ Singles Stableford events sponsored by the Club Convenors and Moville Tool Hire respectively, while Wednesday sees local firm, Gillen’s Supermarket sponsor the fourball betterball event which has already attracted significant attention.

Timesheets are in operation every day and places can be reserved by contacting the club on 00-353-7493-81013 (from N. Ireland).

Meanwhile, Greencastle’s Port A Carraig Singles Stableford was the latest competition in the ‘Player of the Year’ programme and Hugh Doherty (11) earned his first victory of the year with 42 points.

Back to back birdies the 3rd and 4th were accompanied by a further birdie at the 13th.

The runner-up was John McLaughlin (17) with 39 points and third, after break of tie, was John Donaghy (20) with 38 points.

Other prizes were collected by Paul Ferguson (gross), Edmund McAllister (front nine) and Barney Boyle (back nine).

As a result of these scores, the Player of the Year table reads - 1, John McLaughlin, 48 points; 2, Sean McQuillan, 42; 3, Barney Boyle, 36; 4, Hugh Craig, Colm Doherty and Frank Kelly, 34.

The Greencastle Junior Cup team travelled to Roe Park for the qualifying event and came in a very respectable fifth, one place off the qualifying mark.

Tomorrow, the club’s Donegal League team travel to Gweedore for the return leg and having won three of the five points available in the home leg, there is still everything to play for.

The Ulster Cup team have progressed to the third round for the first time in several years, and now meet Lisburn.

Notes From North-West

The Tuesday Open “Meal Deal” from May 22nd was won by Matthew Fitzpatrick (9) with a fine score of 40 points.

Birdies at the 9th, 15th and 16th holes helped Matthew win on a break of tie from five handicapper, David McGeough, who also record a superb score of 40 points.

Meanwhile, the return of the Thursday Open competitions saw some great scoring last week and it was Fiachra O Flaherty (12) who was victorious with an excellent score of 41 points.

A solid front nine of 21pts was followed by a back nine effort of 20 to see Fiachra win by three points.

Full result - 1, Fiachra O’Flaherty (12) 41 points; 2, break of tie, Gerard Gallagher (22) 38; 3, Michael Bradley (7) 38; visitor, Peter Kelly, 28.

Friday night Mixed Foursomes from May 25th - winners were - John O’Donnell, Una Grant and Shelia Reid, 54 points.

Meanwhile, this years Summer Trophy was played in excellent conditions and drew a large number of participants on Satudray last.

Results were - Category One - Johnny Harding (4) 34 pts.; Category Two, Brian Bradley (12) 40 pts.; Category Three - Jim McLaughlin (19) 36; and Category Four - Stephen Stewart (23) 37 pts.

Last Sunday’s Confined Singles Stroke was won by Willie Meenan (20) with a superb score of 65 nett, enough to see Willie win by one stroke from Sean Bridge (9).

Karl King finished in third, also on 66 nett following a break of tie.

The gross was won by Padraig MacLochlainn with a 73 while Kevin Callaghan (2&) claimed the back nine with 33.

This weekend’s fixtures - today (Friday), Mixed Foursomes at 5.30 p.m. sharp.

Tomorrow (Sat.), Buncrana GAA Open Teams of Four Classic.

Roy in Control at

Faughan Valley

13 handicapper, Roy Cooke, was on top form in last week’s Midweek Open at Faughan Valley, his 41 points giving him top honours in perfect conditions.

Full results were - Midweek Open - 1, Roy Cooke (13) 41 points; 2, James Lindsay (3) 38; 3, David Taylor, 37.

Meanwhile, in the weekend open stableford, Aidan O’Connor (22) took first spot with 39 points, two points clear of runner-up, Martin Mailey (19) while third place was filled by 13 handicapper, Tony P. Griffiths, with 36 points.

In the annual Travellers Perpetual Cup, which was held this year at Donaghadee and Clandeboye, Conrad Carlin lifted the trophy for the second year with a accumulated score of 76 points (two cards from three), one point clear of club Captain, Cecil King.

This weekend Faughan Valley will be hosting an Open Stroke competition tomorrow (Sat.) while on Sunday the Happy Landing Open Stableford is on offer..

Sunday is also the start of the annual “Irons” competition and on Monday the Campsie club will host the Captain’s Charity Day in aid of the Altnagelvin Cardiac Assessment Unit.

Timesheets are in operation for all competitions at Faughan Valley.

Phoenix Golf Society

The Phoenix Golf Society outing played at North-West on Saturday last, May 26th, was won by Maeliosa Barr, whose 35 points gqave him a three point cushion on the chasing pack.

Full results were - 1, Maeliosa Barr, 35 points; 2, Daniel Harkin, 32; 3, Tony Crowley, 30; front nine, Christy Coyle, 18; back nine, Chris Galloway, 17.

The next outing is President’s Day at Foyle on Saturday, June 30th at 11.45 a.m.

Magnet Bar Golf Society

Mr. Stephen Kelly will host Captain’s Day this Sunday for members of the Magnet Bar Golf Society at Gracehill.

The first tee has been reserved from 10.00 a.m. and there are limited places available for anyone that hasn’t booked to play.

Please contact Stephen or Noel as soon as possible.

The bus will leave the Magnet Bar at 8 sharp on Sunday.
