WEDNESDAY night’s “Dessie’s Run” 10K, in the Gransha Grounds, attracted close to 200 entries and in very good running conditions served up a top class event.
Greg Roberts reprised his 2011 victory with an impressive 30 mins. 49 secs. victory and Letterkenny’s Maria McCambridge clocked a classy 33 m. 41 secs. for a runaway win in the women’s race.
The Spartans were dominant in the up front men’s race, placing six in the top seven and easily won the ‘four to score’ team competition. Greg Roberts looked good throughout and was chased home by Declan Reed whose 31 m. 19 secs. was a brilliant new PB.
Paddy Mor Doherty ran himself out for 33 m. 06 secs. for fourth and the M35 prize, after a race-long tussle with Noel Logan whose 33 m. 09 secs. was a another PB . Gary Slevin finished next on 33 m. 19 secs. with a real gutsy effort and Brendan Murphy ran 33 m. 39 secs. for seventh.
Foyle Valley’s Scott Rankin ran extremely well for third place with a significant 32 m. dead PB and Pius McIntyre got to within three seconds of Brendan Murphy with 33 m. 39 seces. in eighth place.
Maria McCambridge underlined her 33 m 41 secs. run with ninth overall and Inishowen’s Joe McKinney completed the top ten on 34 m. 06 secs. to claim the M40 prize.
In the women’s race Gillian Wasson (Springwell) took second spot on 39 m. 31 secs. and in third was the Spartans’ Jackie McGinley on 41 m. 12 secs. The promoting club comfortably won the team race with McGinley backed up by Catherine Lilburn, 41 m. 42 secs.; Sarah Mahon, 43 m. 39 secs. and Ciara Fraser, 43 m. 40 secs.
Other category winners were - M45 Gerry Duddy, 35m 20s; M50, Richard McCarthy, 38m 34s; M55, Jim Breen, 37m 23s; M60, Martin McNulty, 45m 47s; M65, Christy McMonagle, 40m 50s; M U20, Dale Kelly, 40m. 16s; F35, Elizabeth McDaid, 43m 40s; F40, Breege Collins, 48m 10s; F45, Lorraine Carlin, 45m 27s; F50, Gloria Donaghy, 45m 35s; F60, Roisin Lynch, 47m 36s.
The prizes, including the Perpetual Cup for the overall winner, were presented on behalf of the McNulty family by Margaret McNulty at the post event function in the U3A Foyle premisses, which hosted the race administration.
Many of the “Dessie’s Run” participants enjoyed the post race refreshments discussing their performances on the night and looking forward to returning to Gransha for the upcoming Waterside Half Marathon.
