JOHNNY Harvey was the big winner at Greencastle last weekend when claiming Sunday’s Kelly’s Fuels Singles Stableford. As other struggled, Johnny assembled a wonderful score of 40 points, a massive five points clear of his nearest rival.

Paul Ferguson (with 35 points) emerged the runner-up and in third spot was Gerard Harvey after he survived a break of tie on 31 points. The gross prize was won by Paddy Monagle.

The Easter weekend tees-off with a Ladies and Gents’ Open Stableford with a timesheet in operation on Saturday while Sunday’s event is the traditional An Tostal Cup, a betterball competition.

This is also doubling up as a qualifier for the GUI Ulster Branch Centenary competition with the winning pair going forward to represent the club at the regional final scheduled for North-West on June 23rd next.

The top four clubs from the regional final progress to Royal Belfast for the Grand Final in September.

On Monday next, the Easter Open Stableford will be staged for Ladies and Gents and a timesheet has been posted.

The club’s year long ‘Chip-in and Win’ Draw took place last Monday at the annual Captains’ Drive In. The top prize of five years membership was won by Gerry McQuillan. Phil Clemas took second prize, three years membership and Shaun Gillespie took third prize which was one year’s membership.

There were also 10 prizes of E100 which were won by - Damien Martin, Adrian McClenaghan, Thomas Doherty, Ryan Doherty, Frank Faulkner, Harry Cavanagh, Willie Havlin, Anne McDermott, Liam Clarke and Brian Reidy. The club’s Council wish to extend sincere thanks to all those who entered the draw and wish all members at Happy Easter.

Entries are now being taken for the Donegal Links Classic on May 27, 28 & 29th. Play three courses including Ballyliffin, Rosapenna & Portsalon, for just E100 (visitors) and E80 (members).

North-West Notes

Peter Kelly claimed the Open Meal Deal at North-West last week, March 19th, in particularly difficult conditions.

The 13 handicapper coped best with the elements to return the top score of 36 points.

Peter started with a fine front nine of 20 points and he managed to build on that platform with a further 16 points accumulated on the way home.

Full results were - 1, Peter Kelly (13) 36 points; 2, Stephen MacLochlainn (8) 34.

Meanwhile in last Sunday’s Confined Singles Stableford, a bitterly cold wind did not deter a small bunch of hearty souls who ventured out onto the fairways to take on the challenging conditions.

And leading the way was Kevin O’Donnell(16) who dispite a blank at the difficult par three 8th, he came home with a fine score of 38 points. In second spot was the ever consistent Stephen MacLochlainn (8) with 37, one clear of John Spence (11).

The C.S.S. was 35 pts. Just two “2’s” were carded on the day.

This weekend’s events will be dominated by Open competitions on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The usual Open “Meal Deal” will be on offer on Tuesday, next, April end, the event considered great value for visitors, E20 which includes golf, competition entry fee, and a meal in the clubhouse after golf.

Centenary Fourball

Postponed at Buncrana

Due to the adverse weather conditions on Saturday, last weekend’s G.U.I. Centenary Fourball Betterball was postponed. This competition has now been rescheduled to the weekend of April 6th and 7th.

The club organised an 18 holes Confined Sweep on Sunday last and a few hearty souls braved the cold wintry conditions with Gearóid Doherty finally ending his runner-up hoodoo. The 21 handicapper returned the top score of 40 points.

Full results were - 1,Gearóid Doherty (21) 40 points; 2, break of tie, Barry Dillon (25) 39.

The C.S.S. was 38 pts.

This weekend’s competition is an Open Fourball Scramble (any combination) sponsored by Supervalu, Buncrana. This is one of the clubs most popular events and tee-times are already at a premium. Times should be booked on 074-93-62279.

The club recently introduced a new membership rate for young adult’s ages 18 – 21 years of E150 for full membership for the year. Those interested should call to the clubhouse for further information.

Annual membership fees are now due and there is also availability for new members. Annual membership costs gents, E303 (£255), ladies E210 (£175) which includes all G.U.I. levies and personal insurance.
