HOT ON the heels of staging the Nine Counties Amateur Boxing Championships, the Half-Way House near Burnfoot will be the centre of attention tomorrow night when the Illies Golden Gloves ABC will stage their annual tournament.

With so many new youngsters now associated with the progressive Buncrana club, club coach, Eamon Duffy, is confident that quite a few have the potential to emulate the success of the club’s senior stars such as William McLaughlin and Tyrone McCullagh.

Boxers such as the Moran brothers, Daryl and Lee, from the Dunree area of Inishowen and the Harkin brothers, Lee and Aaron, from Clonmany, have been matched as have prominent youngsters such as John Cassidy, Thomas Mongan, Eamon Sweeney, Michael Doherty and Garvin Friel.

However, the highlight of the night is expected to be the top of the bill heavyweight clash involving Illies member, Stephen O’Sullivan, who will face opposition from the Twin Towns club in Stephen Stokes.

Stokes, a former national champion, boasts the better experience, however, 6’ 2” O’Sullivan has been training and boxing well of late and he is expected to cause the Ballybofey man no shortage of problems.

Tomorrow night’s opponents will come in the form of an Ulster-Connacht Selet and a total of 15 contests are down for decision. The first bout will get underway at 8.30 p.m. sharp.

A good night’s entertainment is assured and those wishing to attend the function are advised to arrive at the Burnfoot venue in good time in order to secure the better seats.
