ILLIES Golden Gloves celebrated a double gold success at the 2014 Irish Boy and Youth Championships at the National Stadium, Dublin last weekend.
Ryan Greene and John Moran secured victories for the Buncrana based amateur boxing club in the finals of the Youth 2 57kgs and Boy 4 36kgs respectively - the 30th and 31st Irish titles won by Illies in its 15 year history!
Bridgend lad, Greene, a former Oakleaf ABC member recently recruited by Illies, was delighted after recording a dominant 3-0 win over Gleann’s Sean P. Morris in the 57kgs showpiece.
Greene began at a blistering pace in the first round and after a 30-27 round in the bank, he never looked back.
“I found my feet and caught him a couple of good shots,” he said. “He was hitting my gloves but I thought he might have been working more for a while.
“I was hitting him hard and was confident once I found my feet that I could win.”
The win was Greene’s fifth Irish title after winning four times with Brandywell outfit, Oakleaf.
And Greene’s stablemate, Moran - making his first appearance on the national stage - won the opening two rounds in his final against Michael Maughan of Avona to secure a 2-1 victory in the Boy 4 final.
Meanwhile, Joseph Reddin, also from Illies lost bravely by 3-0 to Danny Barrett of Champs Camp in the Youth 2 66kgs final.
Illies also enjoyed great success at the Ulster Schooloys Championships in Newtownstewart last Sunday.
Talented trio, Cian Moran, Lee Harkin and Charles Delaney (blue vests) claimed Ulster titles and have qualified for the National Schoolboy championships in Dublin which take place from April 22nd-26th next.
