The final of the prestigious City of Derry Open Mixed Foursomes Matchplay tournament, now in it’s 25th year, came to a conclusion on Wednesday last.
And the husband and wife pairing of Cheryl and John Chambers celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in 2013, claimed a rsounding victory.
With entrants drawn from Dunfanaghy, North-West, Greencastle, Redcastle, Foyle and City of Derry Golf Clubs, the final was contested by Cheryl (20) and John(10) and Ciara Quigg(15) and Ernie Heywood (Scr).
After setting up a 2up lead after three holes, Cheryl and John were never behind at any time in the match and despite being pegged back on two occasions to one hole, they nevertheless played steady golf using their eight shots to good advantage.
In reaching the final the Chambers pairing defeated Kathleen Hutton and Andy Meenagh and the Quigg-Heywood partnership overcame Anne Hamilton and Cormac McGeady on the semi-finals.
The traditional Plate competition takes place on this coming Sunday, September 29th and tee times can be booked through the Pro Shop at City of Derry G.C.
Buncrana Juveniles win Donegal League
The Under-16s Juvenile team made club history last weekend by becoming the first Buncrana Golf Club team to win the Donegal Youth Match Play.
The team of Shane Dillon, Matthew Stainsby, Jack Duffy, Craig Doherty, Ciaran Bradley, Tom Clare, Shane McClean and Caolan McHugh, under the guidance of team captains, Francis McGrory and Oliver Doherty, overcame some very tough opposition to take the title.
In the first round they defeated Donegal Golf Club before going on to claim victory over last year’s winners Gweedore in the semi-finals.
And in the final they overcame Letterkenny by four matches to two. This was a great all round performance by the boys and it was well deserved for all the practice and effort put in by everyone involveD.
Meanwhile, the competition last weekend was the Frank Callaghan Memorial Open Stableford which was sponsored by Callaghan Jewellers Buncrana.
There was a tremendous turnout for this competition and five handicapper Brian Griffin secured first prize with a tremendous score of 43 points.

The Owen McDaid (Roe) Winter League will commence this weekend, September 28th and 29th and, with a new format this year, it promises to be a very exciting competition.
All details are posted on the clubhouse noticeboard and any new members will be eligible to participate in this competition.
This will be the only competitive golf for the next couple of months and players always find that playing in the Winter League helps to maintain their game to a higher standard.
The qualifying for the annual Christmas Hamper has now commenced and competitors can take cards in conjunction with other competitions if they wish. The entry fee is E4 with a E2 re-entry and it takes 21 points over nine holes to qualify. The “Find the Joker” fundraising effort is up and running again with the jackpot already at E790. Lines cost E2 each and the committee would appreciate it if members would buy a line or even help with the sale of a card.
There is a membership deal available for new members. Males pay €305 (£255) and Ladies pay €210 (£175).
