Laura nets Challenge Cup at Dunfanaghy while Gemma nets Prehen prize

Laura McElhinney produced the performance of the day to net The Challenge Cup in difficult conditions at Dunfanaghy last weekend.

The competitions’s position as one of the most coveted ladies trophies was reflected in the large entry and although the day started fair for the early starters, the weather deteriorated leaving those starting later to contend with strong winds and persistent rain.

Yet McElhinney’s performance was especially noteworthy not only because of the conditions she played in but also because, having been cut five shots in her previous two competitions, she scored a nett 66 off her new handicap of 25. Maggie Foy (8) claimed second with a nett 69 on a break of tie BOT from Cheryl Chambers (19). Kerry Eakin (7) won the gross with an 83 while Mary Lafferty (21) and Jill McCorkell (23) won the front and back 9 respectively. Cheryl Chambers, Heather Hamilton, Sandra McGinley and Grace McFadden all had ‘Twos’. The CSS was 69.

The Maura O’Donnell Team, captained by Barbara Eakin, played Greencastle on Sunday at Dunfanaghy and won 3.5 matches. They travel to Greencastle on Monday, July 20th to play the second leg and we wish them well.

Congratulations to Lady Captain Mabel Gillespie for organising a very successful ‘Bring and Buy’ Sale in The Square on Sunday. The event raised over €2,500 with proceeds going toward the purchase a defibrillator for the club with the remainder going to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, CROI.
