THE Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter Cup has now reached the semi-final stages at Strabane following a close tussle which saw four or five pairs still in with a chance of featuring in this Sunday’s final qualification at the Ballycolman course.
In Section A, leaders Connor Sharkey and Mark Brolly have won the Section despite losing for the first time last weekend at the hands of Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty.
And the latter’s victory saw this pair qualify as runners-up after Freddie Patterson and Michael Baldrick lost their fixture against Aidan Corry and Jason Gourley.
In Section B, Foncie McNally and Brian Forrester returned to winning ways after a hiccup last week taking three points from their match with Neil Alcock and Mickey O’Neill to go through as table toppers.
While John Doherty and Francie Conwell finished the group as the in-form partnership after gaining zero points in week one, they rallied to win their next five matches and thus qualify as group runners -up with Eamon McGlinchey and Paul Kavanagh losing their match last Sunday.

Finally, Strabane recently lost one of the club’s great stalwarts with the death of former Captain and President, Mr. Jim O’Donnell.
Jim was a highly regarded gentleman who always made time for everyone.
He was always a great source of encouragement, particularly to new members of the club, and an absolutely wonderful ambassador for Strabane when representing the club at official functions. He will be very sadly missed.
The sincere sympathy of the club is extended to Jim’s devoted wife, Maureen, and the O’Donnell family circle.
May he rest in peace.
