Foyle Valley’s Adrian McGowan enjoyed his first success at the weekend when claiming the Finn Valley 5 kms. title in a magnificent personal best clocking of 16 mins. 09 seconds.

This popular Donegal 5k early Spring road race was hosted by Finn Valley in the Twin Towns and in keeping with the previous series, attracted huge numbers of runners.

McGowan, who ran a tactical race, was one of 14 runners who finished the race in less than 17 minutes.

City of Derry’s Paul McCafferty and Finn Valley’s Kevin Holian flanked McGowan for the best part of the race and were not going to make it easy for the Foyle Valley man.

However, Adrian, who incidentally had not won a race of this calibre before, opened a sizeable gap ahead of McCafferty and Holian.

Foyle Valley’s Cathal McLaughlin with fellow club mate Stephen Connor and an entourage of Finn Valley, Lifford and Letterkenny athletes spearheaded an attacking posse.

This attacking group where intent on closing in on the leading trio.

And with just over 400 metres to go the chasing group broke, sensing the finish line.

In the end Cathal McLaughlin finished fourth in a time of 16 minutes 28 seconds and the much improving Stephen Connor finished 12th in 16 minutes 45 seconds.

Also running for Foyle Valley for the first time was Adrian Boyle, finishing in a time of 17 minutes and 26 seconds while Michael McGowan, brother of the winner of the race, ran rather tentatively for the first time in this type of race and achieved a time of 18 minutes and 53 seconds.

Young Zac McGowan, running for City of Derry Spartans, finished the race in 25th position in 17 minutes 40 seconds.

All local athletes will now be gearing up for the popular St. Patrick’s Day race held in Gransha Park on Saturday, March 16th.
