FORTY hardy members of the North-Western Alliance battled against galeforce winds at Ballyliffin on Saturday last and despite the elements, some excellent scores were returned.

Golfers from Strabane dominated the leader board with a fantastic score of 40 points returned by Maurice McGettigan, who enjoyed a six points cushion over his brother, Odran,in the runners-up spot.

And making it a clean sweep for the Co. Tyrone club was Eddie McHugh who finished in third spot.

Maurice McGettigan built a fine foundation for victory over the front nine when he assembled 20 points with Odran on 18 and Eddie struggling with a paltry 14 points return.

But after 11 holes Maurice and Odran were level when Odran rallied but that was as close as he got as Maurice added a further eight points over the next three holes while Odran faltered picking up just four.

Eddie improved his score on the way home when assembling 19 points for the back nine but Odran had enough in hand to fend him off by one point.

Meanwhile, in the Gross Section, Seamus Clinton proved that the old dog for the hard road triumphed when he outscored the younger professionals to claim the bragging rights.

Seamus finished two strokes clear of Michael McGeady and Noel Callan.

After nine Seamus and Noel were level on 38 blows, with Michael a shot back .On the back nine Seamus continued to produce very steady golf dropping just two strokes while Noel dropped four and Michael three.

Indeed, Noel pointed to an indifferent putting display for his lapse into third spot.
