THE Pairing of Agnes McLaughin (Foyle) and Christy McWilliams (North-West) claimed the 2012 Todd’s Kia City of Derry Mixed Foursomes Championship on Sunday at Prehen.
Facing the 2005 champions in the showpiece final, Naoimh Quigg & Michael McCullough, the McWilliams and McLaughlin partnership secured the title on the 19th green after the highly competitive match had finished all square after 18 holes.
Rceiving five shots, the winners moved into a two holes lead after three before being pulled back level after five holes. Still all square after nine, the lead continued to change hands bu on the 15th tee the match remained in deadlock.
McLauglin & McWilliams won the 15th at a crucial stage of the match as they would have the benefit of a shot at the 17th. Having lost the 16th to a par which squared the match yet again, the stage was set for a tense finish with a large attendance following the proceedings.
McLaughlin & McWilliams were bunkered on the 17th on three and with Quigg and McCullagh on the green on three, the former pair did well to “get up and down” for a five (nett four) to move onto the 18th in the ascendancy.
However, a solid par four from Quigg & McCullough forced the final into additional sudden death holes.
Returning to the first tee, an excellent shot from McWilliams found the back of the green which ensured a par three (nett two) which basically guaranteed them the title.
