Mugan emerges the matchplay master on Lisfannon Links

DUBLIN native, David Mugan (10), produced the goods at Lisfannon on Sunday when emerging the master following a three-way tie-break in the v. Par competition.

In fact, playing matchplay golf against the course can be a challenging and daunting experience but for Mugan, who rarely missed a fairway, managed to negotiate the links in 75 blows, with a storming finish, to return the winning score of 5 up.

One up at the turn, the 10 handicapper finished his round with three under for the final seven holes winning the last four, which was significant given that both Robbie McFadden (14) and John McGonigle (8) also finished 5 up.

Runner-up, Robbie, was one down after three but he dug deep and won five of the last six holes on the front nine. His only blemish was at the par three 13th hole were a bogey four cost him first place.

John McGonigle (8) recorded four birdies on his card and also finished 5 up, but he could only share the last two holes to come up one shot of first place.

The C.S.S. was 68.

Meanwhile, the weekly Tuesday “Meal Deal” is on offer today, ring Gary in the Golf Shop for timesheet and the North-West Team Classic, which was postponed from Saturday last, will now be play this Saturday with the same timesheet in operation.

N.W. Thursday Society

The North-West Thursday returned last week with a singles stableford event and while Hugh McCarron may have lead the field with 45 points, four handicapper, Stewart McGinlay, negotiated his way around the tight links in a two under gross score which equated to 42 points.

Full results were - Singles Stableford - 1, Hugh McCarron (22) 45 points; 2, Stewart McGinlay (4) 42; 3, Danny Devine (14) 39.

“Twos” were carded by Dermot McDermott, Brian McCarroll, Hugh Doran, Gino Del Pinto, Stewart McGinlay and Hugh McCarron.

This Thursday’s competiton will be another Singles Stableford.

Desmond Motors Open Winter League

The annual Desmond Motors Open Winter League will get under-way at Foyle on Sunday, September 29th with the Qualifying Stage of the teams of four competition.

With two scores to count at each hole and the best eight from 10 cards counting, the qualifying will run until Sunday, December 1st with the top eight teams entering the final which which has been scheduled for Saturday, December 7th when the four team prizes on offer will be decided.

The Ladies Winter League will run during the same dates and will be a ‘three player team event’ played over 11 holes with one prize on offer.

Meanwhile, after 33 rounds, with the best 10 nett scores to count in the P. & L. Electrics “Golfer of the Year,” Cormac McGeady continues to lead the way with an accumulated total of 392 points, 13 points clear of his nearest rival as he closes in on his third consecutive title.
