Nervous finish, but Foyle progress

FOYLE Golf Club experienced mixed emotions in the variouis GUI competitions recently with the Ulster Cup team receiving a fright in Banbridge

Holding a healthy 5-2 lead from the home leg, team captain, Gary Jackson, experienced a particularly nervous finish to the tie as Banbridge had dominated the opening three matches.

However, the local club’s high profile Holmpatrick competition winners, David Knox and Stuart Gauld pulled the tie out of the fire when winning the final two matches before progressing to the next round by four holes.

Meanwhile, Jackie Thomas led his Mixed Foursomes team to Strabane last week to play Omagh in the first round of this year’s competition and they ran out convincing winners.

Having won the first three matches, Foyle were dormie in the remaining two which were called in.

Foyle then hosted Lettekenny on Sunday in the home leg, scond round of the Ulster Fourball competition, having a mountain to climb after losing 5-0 in the away leg at Barnhill.

Requiring just a half match to progress to the next round, Letterkenny prevailed to reach the third round.

And Damien McColgan led the Foyle Fred Daly team to Prehen for the away leg in the second round of the competition against City of Derry and Foyle’s young team aquitted themselves well gaining 2.5 matches to take into the home leg this weekend.

Meanwhile, the first of the season’s Wednesday Open Stablefords attracted a decent entry on a very breezy day last week, with the prizes being distributed between the high, middle and low handicappers.

Paul McGrillis (22) coped best with the diffcult conditions to post a fine winning score of 42 points.

Full results were - 1, Paul McGrillis (22) 42 points; 2, break of tie, John Spence (7) 37; 3, Maurice Temple (13) 37; gross, Damien McKenna, 34; back nine, David Wilson (11) 20.

Darren Clarke Trophy Qualifier - Saturday, May 28th - leading qualifier, Richard Burton (13) 40 points; runner-up, Damien McColgan (14) 39.

Richard will now represent Foyle in the final at Dungannon Golf Club later in the season.

Members are reminded that a nine holes Scramble for Ladies & Gents will be staged this Friday, June 3rd, with a Shotgun start at 5.45 p.m. Following the golf there will be a Prize Presentation and a free Barbeque and Loyalty Evening courtesy of Pitchers’ Restaurant.

An entry sheet is available in the shop and all members taking part are asked to register by Thursday, June 2nd to enable the draw to take place.

Club President, Mr. Rob Gallagher, invites all club members to play for his prizes on Saturday, June 18th and a timesheet is available in the shop and all members playing are asked to enter their names on the sheet before Monday, June 13th, when the draw for playing partners will be made.

Forthcoming competitions - Wednesday, June 1st, Confined Fund-Raising Classic - teams of four (any combination) with re-entry permitted.

Friday, June 3rd, Foyle Friday Open Stableford.

Notes From North-West

The Summer Trophy (categories) was staged on Saturday last at Lisfannon and while the weather wasn’t always favourable, competitors carded some good scores.

A solid round of 74 gross (37 pts.) was enough to see Padraig MacLochlainn (5) claim the Category 1 prize, Padraig finished well with birdies at the 16th and 18th to ensure his first win of the year.

The Category 2 winner, Columb MacLochlainn (11), found his new putter to his liking when he posted 38 points to win his section. Michael Power (18) took home Category 3 with 37 points and Neil Harkin (23) came out on top in Category 3 with 36 points.

The C.S.S. was 72.

This week’s fixtures - Today (Tuesday), Open Meal Deal; Thursday, June 2nd, Thursday Open Stableford; Saturday, June 4th, Open G.A.A. Classic (teams of four), Sunday, June 5th, Open Stableford.

Meanwhile, North-West President, Mr. Tom Crossan, oversaw the first draw of the club’s 200 Club on Friday last when Lady President, Roisin Williamson, claimed the top prize of E500.
