NORTH-WEST’S annual Open Week got off to a flyer at Lisfannon with large entries taking advantage of a course which is in pristine conditions, the slick greens the best they have been for quite some time.

And just to make the point that visiting players would not rule the roost during the opening competitions, the club’s popular Captain stepped up to the plate on Saturday last to claim the first Open Stroke event, the modest Mr. Eugene O’Connell returning a nett 66 to remain in the limelight.

Open Week was launched on Friday last with an Open Teams of Three format and it was a very experienced trio who came out on top. Combining brilliantly to record 82 points were Patrick Duffy, Hugh O’Donnell and Sean Watson who won by virtue of tie break from K. Shiels, Martin Glenn and Vincent Glenn also on 82 points.

The Lisfannon club’s leading official, a competent 10 handicapper, rose to prominence to made sure of his presence on Sunday last in the Open Stroke event.

Proving that his official responsibilities would have no bearing whatsoever on his playing ability, Eugene O’Connell stormed to victory when returning the top score of 66 nett.

However, having carded an ugly “6” at the opening hole, the Sligo man steadied the ship dropping just two more shots on the front nine having carded bogeys at the 7th and 8th.

Two more bogies were registered at the 12th and 14th but from there Eugene parred his way home to seal his first win of the year.

Veteran, Gerry Coyle (13) pipped the big hitting John Meehan (11) on a break of tie for the runners-up spot while the gross prize was won by. Justin MacLochlainn (3) with a 72.

Michael O’Brien (14) won the visitors’ prize with a 74 nett wihile the back nine prize was secured by Karl Kelly (18) on 30 nett.

Meanwhile, one of North-West’s promising juvenile members, Jonathan Doherty (15), put in a fine display on Sunday to win the Open Stableford competition.

Jonathon’s solid card of 41 points was enough to win following a three-way break of tie with Tony McElhinney (14) and Sean McLaughlin (7). Colin Starrett (2) picked up the gross with 70 while Derek Smith (7) won the visitors’ prize with 35 points. D. Simpson (10) claimed the back nine with 22 points.

And a note for the record books was also recorded on Sunday with three “holes in one” recorded during the competition - Kevin McGeough holed his tee-shot at the 8th as did Paul Doherty Jnr, while Don Coyle carded his “ace” on the 16th.

Results from last Tuesday’s Open “Meal Deal” were - 1, break of tie, Christopher Doherty (14) 40 points; 2, Ruairi Bradley (15) 40.

The C.S.S. was 68.

With fine weather gracing the North-West area yesterday, North-West’s Open Week continues today with the Open “Meal Deal” Stableford over 18 holes. Visiting players will be asked to pay E18 which includes golf, competition entry fee and a meal afterwards in the clubhouse.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the traditional Ladies Day while on Thursday, July 7th, it’s a Gents’ Fourball Better Ball competition.
