O’Connor Claims Mid-Summer Open

MARTIN O’Connor (18) produced the goods at Foyle on Wednesday last when claiming the annual Mid-Summer Open Stableford, the 18 handicapper returning a superb score of 44 points.

The winner finished two points of clear of Damien McKenna (1), who took advantage of a Ballyarnett course in pristine condition when producing a magnificent five under par score to claim the runners-up spot on tie-break.

Full results were - 1, Martin O’Connor (18) 44 points; 2, break of tie, Damien McKenna (1) 42; 3, Richard McRory (10) 42; gross, Martin Tope, 33 gross pts.; visitor, Seamus Ferry (14) 35; back nine, Tony Griffiths (21) 22; ladies winner, Denise Callan.

The C.S.S. was 36 pts.

Meanwhile, Foyle Golf Club’s annual 18 holes Scramble & Barbecue, for ladies, gents and juveniles, will be staged this Friday, July 1st with a Shotgun Start at 5.30 p.m.

All members taking part are asked to enter their names on the sheet provided in the Golf Shop before this Thursday, June 30th, when the draw for teams will be made.

Notes From North-West

Aidan Porter (16) made sure of his victory in last Tuesday’s Open “Meal Deal” at Lisfannon when he carded a fantastic 44 points in blustery conditions to win by four points from his closest rival.

And runner-up, Michael Fitzpatrick (13), is also starting to show a bit of consistency, his 40 points would have been enough to win on most occasions.

The C.S.S. was 70.

The Open “Meal Deal” continues today (Tuesday) with an entry fee of E18 for visitors, which includes competition entry fee plus a meal in the clubhouse after golf. For further details ring Gary on 00-353-7493-61715 (from N. Ireland).

Meanwhile, in last week’s Thursday Open Kyle McCarron (9), one of the North-West’s junior members, posted an eye-catching 43 points to secure a five points cushion over the chasing pack.

Kyle has been really coming into form recently following almost a year out through injury. Runner up Francis Stainsby (6) carded a very respectable 38 points to finish in second spot.

City of Derry progress to

Fred Daly Quarter-Final

City of Derry progressed to the quarter-final of the Fred Daly Championship at the expense of Castlerock recently.

All square at 3.5 to 3.5 from the ‘away’ leg, the Prehen team secured at 5.1 to 1.1 result home for an aggregate scor of 9-5.

Representing City of Derry on the day were - Dan Hinds, James Lindsay, Peter Hasson, Luke Hasson, Adam Monaghan, Aaron King and Ryan Godfrey. City of Derry now meet Balmoral or Dunmurray.

Meanwhile, congratulations to City of Derry members, Peter Hasson, Luke Hasson, Andrew Crothers and Conor Moran who represented Oak Grove College in winning the recent Ulster Schools’ Golf Champioship.

Notes From Roe Park

Roe Park staged the Lady Captain’s Prize for gents which was claimed by former Men’s captain Noel McClarey with 39 points.

Kieran Berryman secured econd place following a break of tie with Steven Boyd. Carwyn Guy took the gross prize.

The Junior Section of the club will be looking forward to the return leg of their Fred Daly Shield match at North West Golf Club, with the tie delicately in the balance following a 4-3 victory at home on Sunday. Good wins for Joel Aldard, Luke Thompson, Michael Logue and Dean McGonagle leave them with their noses in front at the half way stage, with everything to play for.

Next week sees two big events at Limavady club with Mr. Derek Powell hosting his Captain’s Day this Saturday with a large turnout expected for the premier event of the year.

On Friday, the generations collide with young accompanying old in the Generation Shield, where older members partner up with the future of the club for what is always an enjoyable day.
