OLIVER Doherty recorded a new course record at Buncrana on Sunday last when winning Mrs. Marian Simpson’s Lady Captain’s Prize to the gents’ branch.

With the competition enjoying a tremendous turnout, Oliver produced the good when returning a gross score of 63, which equates to three under par for the 18 holes.

Playing off a seven handicap, Oliver’s score translated to a fantastic 46 points and a two points cushion over his nearest rival.

There will be an Open Two Ball Rumble on offer this week running until Thursday, June 28th.

This weekend’s competition - to be played from Satuday, June 30th to Monday, July 2nd, is an Open Stableford, which is sponsored by Liam McLaughlin Bookmakers, Market Square, Buncrana. This competition will extend to Monday, July 2nd in order to give members who may be attending the Irish Open at Portrush an opportunity to play for these prizes and golfer of the year points. The next committee meeting will take place Wednesday, July 4th July at 7:00 p.m. sharp and all committee members should be in attendance. The “Find the Joker” fund raising effort continues with the prize fund now at E1,040. Lines cost E2.

Mid-Summer Open

at Foyle

The annual Mid-Summer Open Stableford, sponsored by Allied Shipping Supplies, was blessed with a fine day and in excess of 115 competitors enjoyed a Ballyarnett course in excellent condition.

Matt Donnell (10) made full use of the conditions to post an excellent three over par round for a winning score of 43 points.

Full result - 1, Matt Donnell (10) 43 points; 2, Mark McMenamin (20) 42; 3, Mehawl Jack (20) 40; gross, Stephen Martin, 37; visitor, John Lewers (13), City of Derry, 39; back nine, break of tie, Ruari Moore (6) ; ladies winner, Lorna Thompson (19) 20.

The C.S.S. was 35 pts.

Meanwhile, Foyle Golf Club’s Barton Shield team acquitted themselves well at Rosapenna winning their two matches against Castle Hume by 3 holes in the opening fixture and a formidable Royal Portrush, at the second tie hole.

Foyle now face Ballyliffin at Rosapenna on Sunday, July 15th. Representing Foyle were Damien McKenna, Cormac McGeady, Stephen Martin and Paul McGuigan.

In the Ulster Cup, Gary Jackson and his team travelled to Cushendall for the second leg of their third round match leading by 6-1 from the home leg and they came away comfortable 4.5 to 2.5 winners, an overall victory of 10.5 to 3.5 matches. Foyle now await the winners of the Portstewart v Loughgall match.

Iona Bar Golf Society

The weather was not kind to members of the Iona Bar Golf Society when they visited Newtownstewart on Saturday last.

Last season’s “Golfer of the Year,” Mark McMenamin, coped best in the conditions when returning a superb score of 40 points to defeat Angus Gillespie on a tie-break.
